Very patient with my son, meets the student where they are now and takes them step by step through the work. Very good.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught algebra 1 in both middle school and high school for five years. I also tutored algebra as a college student and worked as a student assistant in a college algebra for high school students program associated with the University of Illinois. I've had numerous students, who initially said that they had math anxiety, tell me they feel confident in tackling algebra after working with me. I look forward to helping you master algebra and feel confident using it.
I have a master's degree in elementary education from the University of Chicago, with an emphasis in math education. My student teaching was in a 4th grade classroom and I taught 5th grade for a year in Chicago, before moving to Colorado. I have mostly taught middle school and high school in Colorado. During my undergraduate career, I tutored several elementary students.
I have taught both introductory and advanced geometry as a high school teacher and also tutored many students in this area. Geometry is a graphical extension of Algebraic reasoning and I stress the link between Algebra and Geometry which helps students connect their prior knowledge to the new material. I have had great success with students who initially felt some math anxiety and helped them to feel more comfortable with math concepts.
Pre-algebra builds on the basic operations in arithmetic and provides the bridge between the more concrete computational skills in elementary math and the more conceptual and abstract operations involved with using variables and combining several computations to get an answer. I can help students make this transition by making sure that getting the answer includes a thorough understanding of the concepts involved so that students can solve similar problems without help.
