Bio

With over 10 years as a Mechanical Engineer in the high-tech industry I put my job aside to pursue my passion. In 2013 I obtained a Math degree (Dean's list) and a Secondary Math Teaching License. As an older student I gained an appreciation to how we learn to think, and as a learning coach I love to put these techniques into practice. Having taught in various middle and high school classrooms I understand the gaps that students struggle with.

I employ multiple representations to connect with the many interpretations that students present, and over the years I have refined my basic technique: to guide the student's questions so they discover the answers. Through inquiry, achieving understanding is also an art best served with a dose of fun.

Well versed in the culture and fully fluent in Spanish and French I'm also authorized to teach these subjects in Colorado's middle and high schools.

French

French

French is almost my mother tongue as my school's full immersion in the language gave me the platform to further my studies in college. My mastery of French opened the door for multiple opportunities, such as a six-week professional exchange to Normandy sponsored by the Rotary club.

Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have a Math degree from the University of Colorado and I have also taken a graduate level course in teaching methods for Algebra from the University of Colorado, which has helped to build a repertoire of tools that students can access to become proficient in the subject. As each student's learning is unique, it is vital for teachers to understand the pyramid of knowledge from the informal to generalized or abstract concepts, and be able to apply this knowledge using multiple representations.
Calculus,

Calculus

This is a good place to brag about receiving the top grade in my class at the University of Colorado. A fundamental knowledge base in my career, Calculus puts together useful math on a vast number of professions. The major concepts are quite few and this is often missed. A BA in Math and secondary math teaching license should be required to tutor this subject, one of my favorites!

Geometry,

Geometry

I have taught Geometry at a local High School, which has helped me to understand student's challenges with the subject.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I have tutored PreCalc in High School and Community College level for 10 years. Pre Calc is a confusing subject since it covers a diversity of topics that are presented for the first time in High School Math. From Trig to Abstract Algebra, it wildly goes where no student ever thought to be!
SAT Math

SAT Math

Over ten years experience in hi-tech engineering was a good entry towards my degree in Math, which in turn prepared me to teach. Having done so both as teacher and tutor I have gained over time an appreciation for the multiple paths to understanding. As my students and parents attest, I can identify the gaps in knowledge and obstacles in learning and test taking. Emphasis has shifted over the years so I teach the current year's ACT and SAT material.

Very patient and accommodating!

He is really good at teaching. When I didn’t understand the first time he explained it, he eventually found a way to explain it in a way I understood. I am definitely going to use him as a resource again!

Excellent teacher with passion for teaching

Sergio has been teaching our son Math for over a year. He is very calm and patient with his student. When the lesson goes on, I can hear his voice over the speaker and immediately feel that he is truly passionate about teaching. His excitement becomes obvious when his student connects the dots and understands a new concept. He knows his subject matter very well. We are really glad that we found him.

Excellent Algebra Tutor

My son was struggling with Algebra due to the COVID shutdowns and distance learning. I was worried he wasn't grasping the concepts and he would have to attend summer school. Meeting twice a week for an hour each session, Sergio used a patient and understanding approach to tutor my son in Algebra over the past semester and raise his grade by two total letters (19 point increase from the end of the prior semester)! For all of you looking for a tutor, I would highly recommend Sergio. His tutoring methods have helped my son tremendously!

Great Calculus tutor

Sergio is truly a blessing. His background in engineering gives him a thought process like no other and his ability to clarify concepts in a way that easy to grasp is amazing. I cannot thank Sergio enough for the time he’s given me in each session. I am an engineering student at Eastern Michigan University and Sergio helped me overcome Calculus 1 on my third time taking it. Through a whole term his background knowledge has taught me rules and pre determined knowledge that were needed to start certain calculus problems. This was an area I was lacking in, as there were many math rules I had forgotten about from prior math courses. Sergio not only reminded me of those rules but clarified any misunderstanding in the proofs and also guided my thinking to the correct areas. As the term continued Sergio worked closely with me in understanding “why” math is the way it is. I look forward to continuing to work with Sergio in the future. Thank you Sergio, you are the best
