Finally putting my job aside to pursue my passion, I left engineering and completed both a Math degree (Dean's list) and a secondary math teaching license in 2013. I tutored my way through school and students, at a minimum, raised one letter grade. Most importantly they gained an appreciation of learning how to think, as I guide them through a process of understanding. Having taught in various middle and high school classrooms for the last four years, I understand what a teacher requires, what is important in a lesson and what will most likely be tested.
I am fortunate to have gained industry experience to provide multiple representations students use to make sense of it all and answer the question, "why do I need this??" I am also qualified to teach Spanish and French in Colorado schools. A broad view has helped to connect to my students through multiple representations. I incorporate my experience in industry, language and world travels to make the lessons fun and the concepts easy to grasp. Sergio is a brilliant math tutor. He is able to meet a student where they are and guide them to academic success. He helped my son go from flailing in math to mastery. And, he made this turnaround in my son much faster than I even hoped. I wholeheartedly recommend Sergio.
What I really appreciate about Sergio is that he works hard to insure that the student is not simply memorizing rule-sets or formulas, but has a solid grasp of the underlying concepts.
Our family is so thankful to have found Sergio. He is well versed in so many disciplines and a pretty cool guy to boot. Our 15 year old son needed assistance in Spanish as well as complex mathematics. Sergio continues to handle both with ease and patience. Highly recommend!
Sergio takes the time to figure out what your child's tutoring needs are and works well with teens! So grateful for his assistance.
Today, Sergio tirelessly explained functions and parabolas multiple times and multiple ways to a student who had great difficulty understanding. His patience and calm demeanor helped that student from completely melting down and giving up. I 100% recommend Sergio!
We worked on pdf, cdf, and the calculation of percentiles. He made me feel comfortable. I'm looking forward to more sessions.
Sergio is an excellent tutor. Patient, kind and he uses several modes of explaining a basic math problem. We are new to each other so we are in the assessment stage and I'm sure he is attempting to figure out how I learn best. You won't be disappointed with his style. Thanks, Sergio. I'm feeling empowered with the subject.
Sergio is very smart and truly understands Calculus. He is also personable and can convey information in a clear way. My daughter enjoys the tutoring sessions and has found Sergio's help to be very valuable.
Off to a great start. I started having Sergio tutor my son in middle school French a couple of months ago. My son is shy, so he can be apprehensive when meeting new people, but he actually looks forward working with Sergio each week. Sergio is patient and works well with my son. We will definitely continue to work with Sergio!
Sergio really helped our high school student with her Algebra. She was struggling to grasp concepts, and he was very patient and creative in explaining problems in a variety of ways. Sergio doesn't just teach in a superficial way - he takes the time to make sure that the student fully understands each step and the underlying principles or concepts in a way that will help them with future problems. He has a very patient, methodical and reassuring approach that helped our daughter regain her confidence in math. He's dependable and flexible. We would highly recommend him!
My son was struggling with Advanced Pre-Calc. Within a month's time Sergio helped him pull his grade back up to a C, as he started to get B's and C's on his tests. My son is feeling much more confident and is hoping to get a B next semester. Sergio is very patient and is flexible with his scheduling. We even did two days of tutoring (back to back) in preparation for the final and that was a huge help. Thanks, Sergio. Looking forward to next semester.
Sergio has made it very easy to get the help my son needs with his high school Algebra 1 class. We needed help quickly since the semester is coming to a close. He has been very responsive in setting up appointments and makes it easy to meet with him. My son gives Sergio five stars for the way he has helped him understand algebraic concepts. My son says that Sergio doesn't just talk to him about the concepts--he shows him in a way that is easy to grasp. We recommend Sergio as a tutor!
My daughter had her first lesson with Sergio yesterday. I thought she might feel a little awkward with a male tutor, but Sergio has a nice, friendly demeanor that made her feel at ease. Not only does he know the material, but his soothing voice and manner kept her from getting overwhelmed and frustrated--as happens when her parents try to help.
We have been so please with Sergio's tutoring. He is able to use many teaching modalities to work with my son and has endless patience. He is very good at multiple subjects. We have seen an improvement not only in my son's grades, but also in his own motivation to study. Sergio has been a great investment for our family.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Having taught Algebra I at the high school level and having taken a graduate level Algebra methods course have helped me build a repertoire of tools that students use to become proficient. Each learning path is unique, but the pyramid of knowledge, from the informal to generalized or abstract concepts, must be built. To this end, I strive to use multiple representations so the student can apply this knowledge.
I have a Math degree from the University of Colorado and I have also taken a graduate level course in teaching methods for Algebra from the University of Colorado, which has helped to build a repertoire of tools that students can access to become proficient in the subject. As each student's learning is unique, it is vital for teachers to understand the pyramid of knowledge from the informal to generalized or abstract concepts, and be able to apply this knowledge using multiple representations.
If not here, where else am I to brag about receiving the top grade in my class at CU Boulder? A fundamental knowledge base in my career as an engineer, Calculus finally puts together useful math on a vast number of professions. I realized the gaps in math education and obtained a BA in Math to complement my secondary math teaching license. After some years of tutoring, Calc has become my favorite subject!
I ran a company called English in Boulder, and I taught English to students from Colombia. As a Secondary Math teacher I also studied the SIOP model for ELL.
I have taught Geometry at a local High School, which has helped me to understand student's challenges with the subject.
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
I have taken the Praxis as a prerequisite to becoming highly qualified to teach math in Colorado. I have HQ status since 2010.
Having taught 7th and 8th grade math using Common Core standards (Thunder Ridge Middle School, Centennial) revealed the knowledge gap most students experience. I have learned multiple models to explain concepts that accommodate various learning styles.
I tutored PreCalc in the Ozone program at Boulder High and have continued doing so for the last five years. It is a subject that spans the entire spectrum of Math in High School, and it has been a real treat to help students understand the big picture.
I started giving Spanish lessons during my lunch hour at work, while I was at Seagate. People loved it and so did I. Teaching caught my attention and I obtained a secondary teaching license with an endorsement in Spanish and French. I can use my own material or the schools to achieve understanding of the structure of the language. After that is just a matter of adding vocabulary!
I am well versed in using Excel for the business school Core Stats class. As a math major, I have taken Stats through the math dept at CU and a graduate methods Stats class from the Math Education curriculum. I have also tutored it for a year at a high school and given private lessons for the last two years.
Having taught Trig/Pre Calc as a student-teacher in a local high school helped my understanding of what and why students struggle with this subject. Going more in depth during my math degree has helped me better explain the concepts.
