About Frances

Hello! My name is Frances and I have been a teacher for most of my adult life. I am fully licensed in both Colorado and New Mexico to teach K-8, all subjects, and ESL to K-12. I am excited to serve you in the capacities of Writing, Reading, English Grammar, and Social Studies. My special interest and strength is in writing! I love teaching and especially love to see students regain confidence and they gain proficiency and understanding in tough subject areas. I enjoy teaching Math and Science through the Middle School years.

My educational story begins as the daughter of two Duke University graduates who both taught at the collegiate level. There was a high value placed on education in my home and that transferred to my own family. I successfully homeschooled my own five children. Two have graduated with Bachelor's degrees and the other three are in college. I went on to pursue my professional education and have 4 years of experience in the Santa Fe Public Schools. I have also taught adult ESL classes and tutored students privately in Math and Reading. I am thrilled to work with you!

I have a deep understanding of student's "fear" of Math. I work with students to overcome this through repetition, use of manipulatives, and hands on strategies that make concepts easier to understand. I also incorporate technology and games into Mathematics instruction. I have attended Professional development courses through Carnegie Learning in addition to attending the National Mid-School Math Conference this year.

I am a strong writer and public speaker and hold a high value on effective communication. It is important to teach not only proper grammar and writing technique but also to impart a passion for reading through a variety of methods. Storytelling through multiple genres is the crux of all language and I feel that students must feel that there is purpose and relevance in literature in order to gain deep understandings in academic language. I am qualified in both New Mexico and Colorado to teach ESL to both adults and children.

I have 20 years of experience as a homeschooling parent. I have five children, two of whom have graduated college with degrees in Biology/Chemistry and International Studies with a minor in Spanish. I homeschool for a variety of reasons and understand the laws governing homeschooling in many states. I use a variety of curriculum and work with my children at their own pace. I also use outside resources such as online coursework and the local community college. I place a high value on students pursuing their passions and developing in their extracurricular endeavours. If something does not work, I adapt my strategy. Flexibility is key. My youngest daughters are twins and juniors in high school. They are still being homeschooled.

I am looking forward to meeting you. I hope that I can support you in reaching your goals. My desire is that you will gain newfound confidence and become empowered as a students. You can achieve anything you set your mind to through effort and quality instruction!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am licensed to teach K-8 Elementary Education in New Mexico and K-6 Elementary Education in Colorado. I have one year of student teaching experience in addition to three years in the Santa Fe Public Schools teaching 4th and 6th grades. I have tutored students privately, and worked in multileveled small groups. I have experience teaching all subjects.

Elementary Math

I am licensed to teach K-8 Mathematics in New Mexico and K-6 Mathematics in Colorado. My teaching experience spans four years in the Santa Fe and Albuquerque Public Schools. I have tutored math privately in addition to working with small groups. I have also attended professional development events including the National Mid School Math Conference and The Carnegie Learning Math for teachers training.

Homeschool

I have personally been a homeschool teacher for many years. I also hold professional teaching in Colorado and New Mexico. I have taught Reading and Writing in the K-8 setting in addition to teaching all subjects in the 4th through 6th grades. For Reading I use a variety of curriculum including strategies to support reading comprehension and encourage deeper understanding of complex text. I teach using phonics and whole reading methods. I believe in creating a love of reading through good books. For Writing I teach Grammar and Spelling separately from the Writing process. Sentence structure in addition to formatting a variety of types of essays is the crux of solid writing.
