As a Community College Instructor, I have been tutoring and teaching adults of all ages in the critical thinking discourses of anthropology, philosophy, writing and composition for more than 25 years. Additionally, I have taught English to Speakers of Other Languages, primarily Spanish-speaking immigrants, through a number of community service organizations.

Every student is unique and presents a different set of needs, expectations, abilities and ethnographic background. I have found tutoring and teaching to be immensely intrinsically rewarding because my students always appreciate the professional and empathetic assistance I am able to provide to them.

I successfully completed all program requirements of Advanced 100-Hour TESOL/TESL/TEFL with specialization in Teaching English Grammar. I recently completed the writing and successful defense of my Doctoral Dissertation earning a Ph.D. in Philosophy, Religious Studies, Theology and Cultural Theory.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I earned an M.A. in Anthropology/Archaeology from Eastern New Mexico University and have taught courses in these fields for nearly 15 years at both the community college and university level. Additionally, I have several years of archaeological field experience to supplement my academic degrees.

Archaeology

My training in archaeology began at the community college level. I earned a Certificate in Archaeology from Fresno City College after having completed more than 20 semester units in Archaeology, Field Archaeology, Field Survey and Excavation techniques and related history of Native American tribes. With my transfer to California State University Fresno, I continued to take archaeology courses including those in Field Archaeology, Prehistory of North America, Prehistory of Europe, Field Geography, Archaeological Statistics, San Joaquin Valley Native Indian Tribes and Human Osteology. My Masters Degree is in Archaeological Theory with a specialty in Southwestern Archaeology and includes Advanced Archaeological Theory, Advanced Flintworking, GeoArchaeology, Archaeology of the Southwest and numerous supportive classes including a Masters Thesis required for the degree. Additionally, I have approximately 5 or more years of direct work experience in the archaeological field. I can supply transcripts to support all of these courses and fieldwork.

Bible Studies

I have college coursework in the Bible, including doctoral coursework. My first courses in the Bible were at Fresno City College in Fresno, California where I took an A.A. Degree in Liberal Arts. I had courses in both the Old and New Testaments (6 college units). Later in my doctoral coursework taken as a full-time student in the Joint Ph.D. Program offered dually by the University of Denver and Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado. I took courses that included both the history, theology and ethics of the Old and New Testaments. I can supply transcripts of these courses, if needed, plus my college teaching in both Comparative Religions and Western Religions incorporates both Old Testament and New Testament literature.

ESL/ESOL

In addition to my published academic qualifications, I have hands-on experience teaching ESL to all students at both the basic and advanced levels. My ESL method is based upon the Communicative Approach and I have used both the Step Forward textbook series published by Oxford University Press, and the Ventures Series published by Cambridge University Press. However, many clients who seek ESL tutoring do not want their lessons formally structured by a text but to have them adapted to their particular language needs in the present moment and I am able to adapt the tutoring sessions to these short-term goals.

ESL WRITING QUALIFICATIONS
I have extensive experience as a student in writing at the college and university level and in assisting students in writing college-level papers as tutor and college professor. I am not an English major but I am proficient in all styles of nonfiction writing and in teaching students at all levels and subjects to become better writers, including my ESL students.

MY OWN EFFORTS TO LEARN SPANISH
I do have personal experience in trying to learn a foreign language, Spanish, and my struggles have given me additional insights into understanding how I can be a better tutor and teacher of ESL. I have travelled and spent time in Nicaragua and Colombia in an effort to improve my Spanish-speaking skills and these cultural experiences have certainly strengthened my own ESL teaching capabilities. I continue to take studies in Spanish and these certainly do inform my own ESL pedagogy.

Philosophy

I recently completed the writing and successful defense of my Doctoral Dissertation earning a Ph.D. in Philosophy, Religious Studies, Theology and Cultural Theory. I have extensive experience in professional academic writing at the college and university level as a graduate student and in assisting students in writing college-level papers as a college professor. I am proficient in nonfiction writing and in teaching students at all levels and in many subjects to become better writers, including my ESL students.

Proofreading

I have extensive experience in proofreading papers written in all subject areas and styles. As a college student, I successfully wrote and defended an honors thesis for my B.A. Degree, then wrote and successfully defended a thesis for my M.A. Degree, and recently wrote a dissertation to successfully complete my Ph.D. Degree. I did the proofreading and editing for these manuscripts. Additionally, I have more than 15 years of college teaching experience where I regularly correct, proofread and edit my students' paper submissions.

Religion

I have earned a Ph.D. in several subjects that include religious studies. My doctoral work included coursework in Christianity, Theology and Indigenous Religions. I have taught courses at the college level in Comparative World Religions, Western Religions, and Native American Religions. I believe I am well-qualified to offer tutoring in this area.

Writing

As a college professor, I have about fifteen years of experience in teaching courses in the critical thinking and writing disciplines, specifically anthropology and philosophy. In every class that I have taught, I require my students to write college-level essays that reflect various styles including persuasive, argumentative and critical/analytic and then I correct these papers for content, grammar, spelling and other basic writing mechanics. I have also written and successfully defended a Masters Thesis and Doctoral Dissertation. Additionally, I completed all Oxford Seminar program requirements to earn 100-hour TESOL/TESL/TEFL Teacher Training Certification with specialization in Teaching English Grammar. I have about four years total combined experience in teaching ESL speaking and writing to adults at both the basic and advanced English levels.
