About Ted

My name is Ted. I have many years of formal education and learning through work experience to share with others. I have always enjoyed helping others understand and master new concepts throughout my life – helping individual children, teaching children and adults in a classroom setting and working with colleagues at work. As a tutor I try to first understand the gaps in a student’s knowledge and then tailor my approach to close those gaps. I will encourage a student to ask questions and be open about the academic challenges they face.

I have a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and have worked in engineering positions for about 25 years using technical skills based on the fundamental concepts I learned in school. The subjects I am offering help with include math, physics, statistics, computer programming and computer applications. I studied math, physics and statistics when I earned my Engineering degree at Penn State. During my engineering career I became a programmer using languages including ‘C’, Visual Basic, PERL and Jscript/JavaScript. I am also proficient in the use of Microsoft applications including Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

As a tutor I consider myself a business person very interested in satisfying my customers. I will discuss any potential student’s needs in depth before we begin to make sure we are a good fit for each other. I intend to make every tutoring relationship a success for both of us.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have studied math as part of my Engineering education. My course work included Trigonometry, several semesters of Calculus, Differential Equations, Matrices and Vector Analysis. I have applied that knowledge as a substitute teacher and tutor for several years.

C

I have used the C programming language as en engineer with Intel Corporation. I used C to create programs used to control a integrated circuit tester and to create a user interface for a engineering tool. I studied C in several week long classes taught by very experienced programmers and also gained insight into the language working with other engineers. As part of my work experience I often helped junior engineers with programming problems including program design and debugging. I have worked with the language for about 5 years.

Computer Programming

I have been a computer programmer, using various languages, at various times throughout my career as an engineer with Intel Corporation. I used C to create programs used to control an integrated circuit tester and to create a user interface for an engineering tool. I also created programs, with C, used to test integrated circuits in a manufacturing environment, wrote various data processing programs using PERL and JavaScript and developed code to extract information from databases. I regularly used code debugging tools to solve coding problems and validate code. I studied various aspects of code development in classes taught by very experienced programmers and gained insight into the language working with other engineers. As part of my work experience I often helped junior engineers with programming problems including program design and debugging. I have worked in positions requiring significant amounts of computer programming for over 10 years.

Perl

I have used the PERL programming language as engineer with Intel Corporation. I used PERL to create data processing programs used in by engineers and in a manufacturing environment. My PERL knowledge is largely self-taught and draws heavily on the languages similarity to C. I have worked with the language for about 3 years.

Prealgebra

I have studied math as part of my Engineering education. My course work included Trigonometry, several semesters of Calculus, Differential Equations, Matrices and Vector Analysis.

Statistics

As an engineer I have used statistics regularly throughout my 20+ year career. I studied statistics as part of my college education. More recently I have helped students improve their understanding of basic probability and statistics concepts.
