Yale University (Geology and Geophysi)
For the past 17 years, with great success and satisfaction, I taught all subjects to high school students at a small, non-traditional private school in Denver. In addition, afternoon and evening hours were spent working individually with students of all types in credit accrual, subject tutoring, and test preparation. I teach Math including Algebra, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus; All science except advanced Physics; any history, and test preparation for college entrance exams or GED, including essays and research papers.
I enjoy teaching immensely but timing and finances allowed me to retire from my former position in July, 2013 (I now serve on the Board of Directors). My educational background (Yale University, Geology and Geophysics) lends itself to Math and Science but I have read extensively in other subjects, as well. I have passed the Teacher certification tests in Colorado and Michigan in Secondary Math and Science, qualified for Alternative Certification in Colorado, and have a Substitute authorization. Please note that I will be unavailable from June 10 to August 14th. I will respond to inquiries, however. My son worked with Sam for several weeks to see if he could improve his score in SAT reading and SAT math. He did fairly well on his initial SAT, but we felt that working with a tutor might help him raise his score. Before my son began his work with Sam, my wife and son were not overly enthusiastic about spending the money and time for the tutoring sessions. However, once the tutoring sessions began, this lack of enthusiasm melted away quickly. Sam not only had a very strong grasp of the subject material, but also a solid familiarity of the tricks and strategies that will facilitate a strong performance in taking the test. Sam is a great teacher, knows the material, and knows how to make the most out of the time spent in the tutoring sessions. My son took his second SAT test yesterday and said that he felt like he really nailed this one; he felt very confident. Although we will not know the outcome of this second test for a few weeks, we feel confident that my son's score will improve significantly. Thank you Sam!
Update: Okay... My son's SAT scores came in. Working with Sam, he raised his SAT reading score 140 points, and his SAT math score 110 points. Bravo!!!
Sam was great. He took his time and made the work easier to understand. San was very patient and explained the steps very well. My son is looking forward to more tutoring lessons with Sam.
In the one hour session, Sam covered every topic that was needed to learn and review. We are very pleased with his efficiency. He did a good job of making sure our student understand the work and is ready to keep moving forward.
My 17 year old son really enjoyed working with Sam on the math and science portions of the ACT. He'd previously tried another tutor--a far less successful match. He felt Sam really listened to him, 'got' what he needed, and helped him prepare well. Sam seemed to be both effective and supportive. I recommend him.
Sam has been teaching me strategies to improve my ACT score and giving me the confidence that I need. I know other students that have worked with him and really improved their scores. With his help I feel confident that my score will improve.
Sam was really skillful at honing in on my son's needs in preparation for the ACT exam. His relaxed and encouraging manner helped to make my son very comfortable when working with him.
Sam didn't waste any time. Thanks for understating the situation and putting a quick plan in place. We look forward to the next visit.
Sam was on time and got right to work with our son. He used great examples and was very good in explaining the math work. He was patient and very knowledgeable in tutoring our son. We would recommend Sam to anyone who needs a tutor.
Sam started with a good assessment of my daughter and came up with a great plan. My daughter is looking forward to working with Sam.
My daughter worked with Sam for 6 weeks (7 sessions) leading up to the February ACT test. She had already studied on her own to take the ACT in September and scored well, particularly in English and Reading. Her goal was to improve her Math and Science scores in order to increase her chances at some of the very competitive colleges. She just received her scores today and improved 4 points in each of those sections! Her overall composite increased by 2 points. Sam was terrific for her. She really enjoyed working with him. He was reliable, thorough, and incredibly knowledgeable. We would have paid MUCH more money for some of the other test prep options and can’t imagine a better outcome. We would highly recommend Sam.
Our son comes back from every session with more confidence and improvement. Sam is honest and very detailed in his review to us after each session. He by far has been a positive and encouraging instructor for our son.
Able to figure out what he is strong or weak in, correct it, have him practice the new skill set and then go forward. Thank-you.
Sam has been a great math and biology tutor to my daughter! She is learning a lot from him and her grades are improving. He's very good at explaining assignments. He is very quick at responding to texts/emails. Highly recommended!
My daughter needed to study for her retake of the SAT. The first time she took the SAT she had completed a study program at a local tutoring center, and she had no desire to repeat that, nor was she motivated to study on her own. Having Sam come to our house made a world of difference. He was able to get her on task and have productive study sessions. He gave her useful tips to improve her score. He recommended a study guide which provided lessons to do between sessions. We do not have her new SAT scores yet. Hopefully we will see an improvement, but regardless, Sam's tutoring was money and time well spent.
Sam has been tutoring my daughter in physics and she has moved from a B+ to an A. Her last two quizzes were 100% and her last test was a 96%. He is easygoing and makes certain that my daughter understands the material without getting stressed. He enjoys what he is doing and it shows. I would highly recommend him.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
