My name is Maria and I have a PhD in Biology. I currently work part time as a researcher at CU in Boulder but always enjoyed teaching and have missed it since I stopped. I have a lot of experience teaching biology courses at the college level and am very confident that I can help students at any level of biology to improve their understanding of the subject. At CU I have taught general biology, non-majors biology and genetics. While most of my professional experience has been teaching at the college level I have spent a lot of time teaching elementary children science topics on a volunteer basis. I started a science program at my children's elementary school where I come into the classrooms and teach various scientific topics ranging from basic physics to the scientific method. Through this experience I have found that I have a knack for relating difficult scientific concepts to young people in a way that they can understand and enjoy. I really enjoy teaching to young people and believe that science can be taught in a way that that makes it fun and exciting. Please contact me and I'll give your student a solid understanding, foundation and interest in biology that will stay with them for a lifetime!

My daughter is very happy with Maria and she likes very much the approach that Maria taking. She told me - she doesn't know what to ask but Maria can easily spot the weaknesses and start working on the.
She is assisting me in preparing to take a biology course in the fall. She does an excellent job of simplifying concepts so they are easy to understand.
Maria is amazing! I literally knew absolutely nothing about biology when I first met up with her. She has patiently taught me everything I needed to know for my CU-Boulder EBIO class. Without Maria I would without a question be failing this class. Not only is she is extremely knowledgeable in biology, she's also extremely patient with me which I can't express how much I appreciate. It's hard to find a tutor these days who can teach you the material, make you interested in the material, and at the same time have an understanding and patient approach. And she goes above and beyond meeting those standards.
Maria is a phenomenal tutor who takes the time to answer my questions. Her level of expertise in the subject matter of Biology is incredibly prevalent, especially when I'm confused or simply not grasping a concept. She's helped me expand my realm on knowledge on topics ranging from Mendelian genetics to transcription of DNA to mRNA. She's good at explaining things in a way that students can easily relate to. I look forward to continue working with her as she helps me prepare for my SAT Subject tests in Biology and AP Biology exams. I'd recommend her to anyone whose looking for a tutor who is personable, patient, and passionate.
Great follow through with my daughter and got her up speed on the subject matter quickly. improved her grade by one whole letter. Was impressed with her flexibility with scheduling and positive attitude towards this process. As my daughter was happy with the experience and succeeded in the subject, I could not be more thrilled with Maria's overall performance.
We needed an algebra tutor for my 8th grade daughter as during placement exams she was noted as "a year behind" her peers in her new school. We were advised to revise 5 sections of the Algebra book that they used. I was expecting to have to have a tutor every week for a few months at least but Maria was able to get my daughter caught up in about 4 sessions during August. I was pleasantly surprised when after two weeks of school on the first parent's night the algebra instructor specifically mentioned that my daughter was completely caught up with her peers.
One thing I've also noticed is how neat my daughter's work is now. Before Maria my daughter's work was all over the page and a scribbled mess. Her presentation is now not just neat, but very beautiful with the use of colors in her lines and graphs. I'm not sure if Maria influenced the artistry in algebra but my daughter no longer rushes through the work to "get it done" but instead actually ENJOYS spending time on her algebra homework.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have always enjoyed and been strong in math. While in college and graduate school I tutored and number of people in college algebra with great success. In my experience math students rarely don't understand the topics as they come up, they simply get the wrong answer in the end. Most of the time this is caused by minor errors in easy calculations rather than a misunderstanding of principles. I'm confident I can help you get through your math fears!
I have a PhD in biology and can help any student at any level of most biological disciplines. My dissertation focussed on evolutionary ecology and population genetics and today I am a evolutionary developmental biologist. I have taught many classes at the college level including general biology, genetics, conservation biology and non-majors biology. I also have extensive research experience in molecular biology and genetics. Contact me and I'll help you with your biology!
Tutoring elementary children involves being able to coach them on numerous subjects including math, reading, grammar, social studies and sciences. I believe I have enough general education to be a help to any elementary student in any of these subjects. I have quite a lot of experience working with children. I have 2 children of my own who attend a school where parent volunteerism in the classroom is a critical component of their early education. I have volunteered in 1-2 classes per month (and sometimes more frequently) for the last 5 years and so have worked with children in first through fifth grade individually and in small groups covering subjects like reading, math, social studies and science. In addition, I have developed a science program in my children's elementary school, during which I present a science topic to the class which was followed by hands on experiments and exercises to help demonstrate the topic to the children. Our group of volunteers did this on a monthly basis for every grade level in the school. I developed all of the curriculum and experiments for these "science days". While all of my experience with elementary age children was on a voluntary basis I have many, many hours of experience working with children in first through fifth grade.
I have taken the following as an undergraduate and graduate student: general genetics, molecular genetics, evolutionary genetics, population genetics, molecular genetic techniques, molecular evolution and ecology and theoretical population genetics. I have taught the genetics portion of general biology as well as general genetics at CU Boulder. In addition I have worked in population genetics as well as molecular genetics laboratories for many years including currently.
