Bio

I love rocks and science and decided to become a geologist when I was in fourth grade. To be a good geologist, I needed to have a firm grasps of many science disciplines including: biology, physics, chemistry, meteorology, botany, zoology, ecology, and astronomy and math too! I worked as a geologist in the oil and gas industry for many years and recently developed the curriculum for and taught physical geology at a local college. In addition to working as a geologist, I used my physics skills when I tested timing (synchronous) belts as a lab tech at Gates Rubber.

Teaching is my second love and I have over 17 years of experience teaching middle school science. Topics taught include earth science, physical science (including physics and chemistry), and biological science (human body, genetics, botany, ecology/environmental science). In addition to science, I taught middle school math and social studies for seven years and incorporated the teaching of writing in my science classes. I enjoy working with young people and spent many years working with youth as an adult leader in 4-H, Cub Scouts, Webelos, Boys Scouts, and at the YMCA. I have spent most of my adult life either working as a scientist or teaching science.

I like to get to know my students, their strengths, challenges, habits and learning styles, and use this knowledge to help them become successful and confident. My goal is for my students to develop a passion for science, or at least a good grasp of science concepts and processes. I have worked with over 1000 students in formal and informal settings and feel that I have achieved my goal with the majority of my students.

I have many interests, especially photography, gardening, and family history. I have been taking classes to develop my urban naturalist skills, including birding, urban forestry, native plant master classes through CSU cooperative extension service, gardening and bee keeping. I try to provide habitat in my yard for the honey bees and native bees, other insects, and birds

Botany

I have taken college botany and paleobotany classes as part of my undergraduate work at Ohio State University, and since that time I have taken a continuing ed class on teaching botany, and many classes on botany and gardening, native plants, urban forestry, and herbalism. I have taught basic botany to my students at a K-8 School (DPS) and at a Middle School. In addition to OSU, the institutions where I have taken botany related classes include: Denver Botanic Gardens, Native Plant Master Program through the Jefferson County cooperative extension agency, a non profit in Denver whose mission is to increase healthy urban forests, a permaculture design certification from the GrowHaus in north Denver and Moon Dance Botanicals, also in Denver.
