About Kris

Picking a tutor is a challenging task for any parent. You are trusting another person with your child's education. I am just the person that you can trust. Originally from Seattle, I moved to Denver in 1994 to attend the University of Denver. After earning my BA in Sociology and Elementary Education, I started my 20+ year career in the Douglas County School District as a 4th grade teacher. Since then, I have also taught kindergarten and first grade. Currently, I have my own tutoring business that specializes in Dyslexia and I am a reading specialist for a gifted and talented school. In the fall, I will be starting my 2nd Masters Degree and working toward a Reading Interventionist Endorsement. I live in Highlands with my husband and two kids.

Helping students unlock the mysteries of reading and writing is my passion. Over the past 20 years, I have taken many classes to build my expertise in these areas. I am a Six Traits of Writing Trainer and I have also been formally trained in Wilson's Fundations phonics program. I have experience with Handwriting Without Tears, Leveled Literacy Intervention, and The Reading Comprehension Toolkit. Last summer, I became a Dyslexia screener and tutor through Susan Barton's company Bright Solutions for Dyslexia, Inc. My training gives me the ability to identify students with Dyslexia and offer tutoring opportunities to assist Dyslexic people in building pathways in their brains. I am eager to work with students in reading and writing to help close the gap in achievement and self esteem.

As an elementary classroom teacher for over 20 years, I have ample experience in all subjects K-6. I am skilled at finding tools to assist struggling learners and I use data to drive my instruction.

Over the years, I have myriad opportunities to work with students on behavior plans, IEP's, READ Plans and gifted and talented ALP's. My wide variety of experience helps me identify with your student and unlock the treasures within.

I am looking forward to working with you and your student. Please contact me so we can get to know each other and find out if we are a good fit.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I have completed the 48 hour course called Dyslexia Screening from Bright Solutions/Barton. In addition, I am tutoring 4 students who have dyslexia currently with the Barton/ OG approved system. I have also read Overcoming Dyslexia by Dr. Sally Shaywitz and have had an introductory 6 hour course in the traditional Orton Gilligham model.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been an elementary teacher in Douglas County for over 20 years. I have taught Kindergarten, 1st, and 4th grades with much success.

Handwriting

I have taken a two day course with Handwriting Without Tears and have taught this handwriting system for over 8 years. In addition, I have learned other manuscript strategies from Wilson Fundations. While teaching kindergarten and 1st grade for the past 9 years, I have used both programs with fidelity in my classroom with students.

Phonics

I have taken many classes on the explicit teaching and scope and sequence for phonics instruction: The Wright Group: Phonics - Not If, But How and When, Wilson Fundations K-2, Barton, and OG. In addition, my 10+ years as a primary teacher have helped me earn an deep understanding of the need for explicit phonics instruction in the struggling reader.

Special Needs

Over the past 20 years, I have worked in K-4 classrooms with very diverse populations. I have had hard of hearing, dyslexic, LD, SED, autistic, IEP, 504, ALP, and READ Act students that I have been responsible for. Currently, I also work with a clinic that specializes in Executive Functioning Disorders and strategies to teach students experiencing those struggles.

Study Skills

I have been trained in Executive Functioning Disorder and refer to the book Smart But Scattered for interventions with study skills, organization, writing projects and homework planning.
