Virginia Tech (Bachelors in Civil Engineering)
California State Dominguez Hills (Other)
I have worked in various fields including Engineering, Math education, Non-Profit Career Counseling, and currently private education. Out of college, I first worked as a Civil Engineer for several years and at night I tutored at a Mathnasium Learning Center to keep my math skills fresh. I felt that I wanted to be in a position to directly help people more, so I went back to school for a one year program to obtain a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics. Once finished, I taught 8th grade Algebra to "at risk" students for a year and the year after I tutored elementary students in Pre-Algebra and Elementary Math.
As the teaching industry was volatile in California, I transitioned to the non-profit world to work with adults in a career coaching capacity. Again, I tutored adults for several years who were taking a Bank Training program. This again allowed me to keep my math skills fresh while being in a different industry. I then moved to Denver and got a job with a private technical college helping graduates through the job search process and again math tutoring in Algebra and Contemporary Math. I enjoy tutoring because I like helping people and I really like math because there is always an answer to a problem-sometimes several ways to get it! And seeing someone have that light bulb moment brings a joy with it that is awesome to witness. I am proud to be a math tutor!
As a teacher at heart, I bring a passion and drive to help others succeed. I put an emphasis on being patient because it is valuable, especially in a one on one tutoring relationship. I make every effort to put myself in the other person's shoes to really try to understand the train of thought and thinking process. This allows me to best provide instruction and help it make sense. I consider myself a lifelong learner and push my students to seek that out themselves.

My daughter has been working with Matthew for 3 weeks on Algebra 1. Her last test was a 94%. She has not had that all year.
Reliable, on time, explains things on her level(she's a freshman).
Will continue to use him!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
