I love to see students learn and feel confident about their learning. I have had the pleasure of working with students in public schools K-8 for over 20 years and believe that any student can learn. My job is to figure out how students learn best and use their strengths to become the best they can be.
I specialize in tutoring students that may have dyslexia or dyscalculia. My background as a Speech/Language Pathologist as well as a certified Special Education Teacher allows me to use a multi-sensory approach to address the language of math as well as number sense and calculation. I also use this approach for the components of reading to provide direct and explicit instruction. I plan various activities to keep the students engaged and learning. I also provide periodic assessments and a progress update.
I try to be flexible with my time. I do have an 8 hour cancellation policy and will attempt to reschedule. I have a small quiet office to work in or will meet at a location that is convenient to the student.
I have over 5 years of middle school math experience that includes not only working with the Common Core Standards, but also classroom instruction and differentiation of content to provide access to all students.
I have an extensive background in multi-sensory instruction for the components of reading; phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. I also have experience with teaching vocabulary and expanding word usage. I use various programs that provide the scaffolding needed to fill in achievement gaps.
I have worked with number sense and calculation with students who struggle with the symbols of math. I bring a multi sensory approach to make the patterns of math easily obtainable as well as understanding the concepts and the language of math.
Phonemic awareness and phonics are the building blocks for literacy and I have an extensive background with many programs that use a multi sensory approach, including Wilson Reading Program, Phonics Boost and Language!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching a multi-sensory approach to reading for years in the schools. I use an Orton Gillingham approach with Wilson Reading Program, Language! and Phonics Boost and Blitz. I use an explicit direct instruction with practice to mastery. I also use my background as speech/language pathologist to address the language of learning the code to read and to work with symbols in math. I am a member of the International Dyslexia Association RMB.
I have a Masters degree in Special Education and have over 90 additional clock hours of training in: DIBELS, Language 3!; Reading Strategies for struggling learners; CDE Odyssey for Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary; Story Grammar Marker; Best Practices for early literacy; LETRs training and Phonemic Awareness training.
I am an expert teaching math and worked in the middle school for many years with the math department, which includes Prealgebra. Math is a language and you need to be fluent in that language to be successful. My background as a Speech/Language Pathologist is unique and I provide vocabulary instruction as well as sequencing and word problem strategies.
I am trained in several reading approaches that address the five components of reading and am a member and tutor endorsed by the International Dyslexia Association - Rocky Mtn Branch. I use the Wilson Reading program, Phonics Boost, Language ! and others to provide individual support and direct instruction.
