About Kelly

I am a graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where I earned a Master of Arts degree in Japanese literature and linguistics. I have been teaching English for years in various places around the world including South Korea, and most recently, Japan. From June 2010 until July of 2013, I taught English to students of all ages at Perfect English School (PES) in Kofu. My school had a strong background in teaching students at every level. I taught elementary, junior high, high school students, and adults. This enabled me to specialize in teaching students who had various needs and were at different learning levels. In addition, my fluency in Japanese was a useful tool when teaching my elementary students, whose English was very limited. My experience at Perfect English School allowed me the opportunity to assume various responsibilities at multiple levels such as, classroom management and extensive lesson planning, as well as preparing students for ESL and school examinations. In addition to solely teaching a class myself, I also worked as a translator. I translated textbooks in a variety of subjects both from Japanese into English and English into Japanese. This enabled me to improve my translation and language skills. I was able to create a cooperative learning environment at my workplace and work well with colleagues on initiatives which improve student achievement.
Throughout the years, I have continually sought teaching opportunities that would allow me to professionally develop. I taught for two years at Kunsan Jigok Elementary School in South Korea. While there, I became aware of the necessity for different instructional strategies that would address the diverse needs of students in terms of language and ESL learning, especially when they receive instruction on a language which differs from the one spoken at home. I feel confident and qualified to take on the challenges that are a part of tutoring, as my teaching experience includes several different settings with various student populations. I am eager to offer my teaching skills to committed individuals with high educational standards within the world of language.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
