About Kristen

Dear Parents,

If you have a child struggling with academics, you know how hard it is for your child to feel good about school. You may see him trying his best, you may see her shut down, or you may hear things like, "I hate math, I hate my teacher, I hate school." Your child is frustrated, and you may be too.

The truth is some of us need to work extra hard at certain subjects, and sometimes studying, even extra hard, isn't enough.

Sometimes kids need help from someone who specializes in this kind of work.

I have been a tutor off and on since 2004 and I am a certified paraprofessional. I have worked with kids of all ages from all backgrounds, and I have seen students go from frustrated with little self-esteem to excited and confident. But my favorite part of working with kids has been seeing the looks on their faces when they suddenly understand how to read a book, write an essay with no help, and realize that they CAN succeed!

If your child needs academic help, please contact me. I would love to meet and discuss his or her needs, and together, come up with a plan for success.

Subjects taught: English, Grammar, Literature, Proofreading, Reading, Vocabulary, Writing, Spelling, American History, World History, Geography, Religion, Social Studies, General Music, Music History, Music Theory, Piano, Voice (Music), Public Speaking, Study Skills, Elementary Science, and Cooking.

I work out of local libraries or coffee shops, or I can come to you. Flexible rates depending on need, where we tutor, and # of hours per week.

Thanks so much, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Best,
Kristen

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

During college I focused on American history from its beginning as a colonized settlement up to the post Civil War era. I can tell you all about the battle of Gettysburg in minute, extensive detail. History is about learning where we came from, and that will help us see into the future.

Elementary Science

I believe that the quality of life will be significantly influenced by science and technology in the 21st century. Therefore, it is important to me to make sure students are familiar with all aspects of science, from scientific thinking to the diversity of the natural world. Most of all, I hope to make all lessons fun for students of all ages!

English

I realize English is difficult to master, even for native speakers. My goal in tutoring in English is to help students with their communication skills and increase their confidence in school. I am able to work with students in literature and language arts, or any other areas as needed.

ESL/ESOL

As a native speaker of English, I feel I am qualified to teach it to non-native speakers. During lessons, I strive to use my background in public speaking and performance to help students feel confident in learning. My lessons mainly focus on pronunciation and intonation, although I cover writing and grammar as well.

General Music

I have classroom experience teaching general music classes to students of all ages, although I focused mainly on the middle school level. This is my second favorite subject to teach - I hope you find it as enjoyable as I do! I know we'll have lots of fun!

Geography

To truly understand the world today, it must be viewed within a spatial context. Yet, this perspective is foreign to most students. Today, with technology as a driving force, the world has become smaller—for example, North America’s physical geography no longer presents a barrier to acts of war. The successes and failures of North America are intertwined with those of the rest of the world, which makes geography an essential course for U.S. students. It helps them view the world from a spatial perspective. This spatial context, or the where and why things occur, is at the core of the course. I promise to challenge each student to think about these issues during our sessions.

Grammar

Grammar is frequently used as a catch-all term for every aspect of the writing process. Students, including both native and international speakers of English, may want help on other parts of the writing process but may lack the necessary vocabulary to identify precisely their concerns; therefore, they may resort to one of the most commonly associated terms for writing, grammar. My goal is to clarify with the student what she or he means by “grammar.” Defining this term can help theme guide the tutoring session in the most effective direction.

Literature

My goal in literature tutoring sessions is to draw students into the time period, genre, and style of the material they are studying by engaging in analytical dialogue, introducing literary theory in accessible ways, and encouraging students to see parallels between the reading and writing processes. As a result, you’ll actually engage with what you’re reading, retain details and themes longer, and, I hope, enjoy yourself along the way. I hope to engage students who aren't naturally drawn to literature.

Music History

I have studied all periods of music history. My specialties are choral music and the music of the 1960's. Quite the contrast, right? I hope to make lessons fun and memorable for you!

Proofreading

My approach is to read through assignments and discuss concerns with each student. I can help you learn to find and correct sentence-level errors (problems like grammar errors, punctuation errors, and typos). My goal with proofreading for students is to teach them to identify problems and address them on their own.

Public Speaking

Public speaking skills are valuable both in your personal life and career. Even if you don't regularly engage in public speaking, developing skills in this area will increase your confidence and reduce anxiety about situations in which you may be called upon to speak in public.

As a long-time performer, I believe I can give a unique perspective to anyone seeking coaching in public speaking.

Reading

I have been reading since I first learned to talk. I read nonstop, and my reading material is varied depending on my mood. I hope to share my passion for reading with you!

Religion

My goal in tutoring students in religious studies is to challenge each student to think critically about issues involving philosophy and religious ethics. I studied various branches of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Mormonism, Hinduism and various world religions while in college. Each religion has many similarities to other religions, as well as many differences. I hope to explore those things with each student.

Social Studies

I have several years of experience tutoring others in this subject. I enjoy challenging students to explore the world in new ways and learning to critically think about their changing place in it. Teaching social studies is about showing how seemingly ordinary people have made a difference throughout various eras of history, and I hope to make lessons enjoyable for all students.

Spelling

Spelling is not a major focus of our education system's teaching goals, largely because we believe it should be connected with other activities. Experience has taught us, though, that spelling is a common learner goal and tutor concern. If a learner came into the program asking to work exclusively on spelling, the natural question we would ask would be "spelling what?" When spelling is tied to the learner's life goals and survival needs, it is much more likely to be successful.

Study Skills

My goal is to help students by teaching them to employ things such as text study strategies, lecture note-taking techniques, and test-taking strategies (for both essay exams and multiple choice exams). I will aim to create specific, tailor-made plans for each student based on their learning style. I want students to feel confident in school.

Vocabulary

As a long time reader and writer, I have an extensive vocabulary. My goal with each student is to help them expand their own vocabulary and make good word choices. Vocabulary development is a vital part of all content learning. Without understanding the meanings of words and their structure, it becomes harder to comprehend text while reading. These skills can be used in multiple situations.

World History

My goal during tutoring sessions is to put the subject matter into a form that is relatable to students and their lives. I strive to link what students are studying to prior knowledge and enhance the learning process. I hope I can make the lessons fun, too!

Writing

Whether you are an attorney, manager, student or blogger, writing skills are essential for your success. Considering the rise of the information age, they are even more important, as people are surrounded by e-mails, wikis, social networks and so on. Writing is about making good word choices, not just filling a page. My goal in tutoring in writing is to help students make better choices.
