UNC (Speech Pathology)
My name is Tristan and I have had the pleasure of helping children for many years! What I enjoy about tutoring is the ability to work one-on-one with students in a comfortable and individualized learning atmosphere. I love the idea of simplifying material that is effective and easy for the student to understand and apply to their studies. To witness that sense of relief when a student grasps a challenging concept is very rewarding!
I received my BS in Speech-Pathology and Audiology from UNC in 2009 and have worked as a Speech and Educational Therapist, focusing on Reading and Writing, Study Skills, Mathematics and Organizational skills.
My compassion, patience and non-judgmental approach makes me an outstanding tutor.
I am available to provide tutoring MWF mornings, 9:30a.m.-12:30p.m. evenings, 5:00p.m.-9:00p.m. and Saturday mornings, 8:00a.m.-Noon traveling to students homes or at a public library.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve great success!! Hello!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a Speech and Educational Therapist, I have treated all ages of students diagnosed with Autism, mild to severe, for seven years. My experience includes helping students learn how to communicate through PECS and ASL, with the addition of incorporating behavioral techniques into my sessions.
As a Speech therapist, I've helped children learn how to pronounce words by learning individual sounds of letters, letter groups and syllables. This is called Phonemic Awareness. I've also used Hooked on Phonics and Orton Gillingham's Reading Program.
Study Skills are one of the most important Executive Functioning skills a student must have. I've taught many study skills for middle and high school students as an Educational therapist. Some methods I've incorporated in my sessions are: Reducing Interference, Space It Out, Use Whole and Part Learning, Reciting information and using SQ3R. In addition, modeling planning/prioritization, organizing, time management, task initiation and emotional control are vital in reaching this goal!
