About Kellie

I am a licensed elementary teacher with an endorsement as a special education generalist. In addition, I am highly qualified in English and social studies. I currently teach Special Education at a Douglas County high school. I co-teach English classes and I have experience teaching elementary, middle school, and high school. I have a bachelor's degree in education and psychology and a master's degree in education.

My focus is on the five components of reading which include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency and accuracy, comprehension, and vocabulary. As a moderate needs teacher, I work with students with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, speech/language, and other reading disabilities. I have resources and experience teaching children the reading skills needed to be successful students.

I tutor after school and on weekends. I make lessons fun and engaging by using games, books, and other high interest materials. I love what I do and want to share my enthusiasm with learning with reluctant students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I currently work with students diagnosed with ADD/ADHD; on medication and not on medication. I understand the frustration with working with a child that has a hard time staying on task and focused. One-on-one instruction works well with ADD/ADHD students because it is easier for the teacher to redirect the student and take breaks when needed. I enjoy working with these students because there is so much hidden potential that I want to help the student discover.

Dyslexia

As a Learning Specialist, I have worked with students diagnosed with Dyslexia. I am trained in the Wilson Reading System, a program that addresses dyslexia and other learning disabilities. I love reading and want to share my passion for reading with others.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a licensed elementary teacher. I have three years teaching experience at the elementary level.

Phonics

As a Learning Specialist, I have experience with phonics education. I am trained in the Wilson Reading System that works explicitly with phonics and reading. I am a licensed elementary teacher with a Psychology background. I am also a Special Education Generalist for ages 5-21. I have worked with students in reading and have seen success.

Special Needs

I am a licensed Special Education Teacher in Colorado. I have worked with special education students in grades K-12 and am certified as a Special Education Generalist from ages 5-21. I have special education experience at the elementary level, the middle school level and I am currently working at the high school level. I have six years teaching experience as a Learning Specialist.

My daughter's making progress!

Kellie is always very patient with my shy daughter. She adapts the lessons to her needs in reading and fluency. Since the school year started, my daughter's already moved up to a higher reading group and increased her reading speed.
