About George

Summary
-------------

My goal in working with students is to help them understand the principles behind the subject they are working in. Anyone can understand all the intro sciences well, if they are willing to put in the work and have a teacher that has an interest in helping them get there. I'm convinced that the reason so many students are frustrated by introductory physics, chemistry, and calculus is that they are often taught by people that simply don't understand the topics and couldn't care less if their students learned from them. This leads a lot of students to tell themselves things like "I guess I'm just not good at math" and give up. That's a tragedy.

This is where people like me come in. I've been learning science, math, and engineering for the past 10 years and there are two things I've learned. First, a huge part of learning science is learning how to learn science. There are techniques to learning these subjects and you get better at them the more you do them. As high school or early college students, you haven't learned that yet - I can help you do that.

The second, and probably most important, thing is the cumulative nature of what you're learning. If your algebra skills are really weak, then calculus will really be a struggle for you. And if you don't learn calculus really well, you'll get smoked when you get to physics because algebra and calculus are everywhere. The good news is that if you learn the basics really well, everything else, particularly organic chemistry, is a breeze.

If this sounds like the type of education you want to have, I'd be delighted to help you attain it.

Teaching Experience
-----------------------------

I have a significant amount of experience teaching science and mathematics both formally and informally. I have worked extensively with high school students and undergraduate students. Here is a brief summary:

- Post-baccalaureate teaching assistant for the Dept. of Integrative Biology at the University of Colorado - Denver (UCD)
- I have taught a prep course for students enrolled in organic chemistry at UCD for the last three summers. The concept and design of the course were my own and it was approved and recommended by the department chair.
- Undergraduate teaching assistant for the Dept. of Physics at Colorado State University
- Informally tutored underclassman and peers nearly every semester I have been in school

While I am comfortable working with students of all backgrounds, the bulk of my recent work has been with students intending to apply to medical school and other schools for health professionals. As a former premed student myself, I have a high degree of experience with preparation for the MCAT - I sat the exam in September 2012 and scored a 39Q, which is around the 99th percentile. If your goal is to secure a great score on the MCAT I can help you prepare for it.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

MCAT

After completing a physics degree at Colorado State University, I enrolled as a post baccalaureate student at the University of Colorado-Denver to prepare for medical school. I completed the full biology and organic chemistry sequences, as well as a year of graduate level biochemistry, genetics, and physiology. Once my prerequisites were complete, I took the exam and scored a 39Q - PS: 14, VR: 11, BS: 14.

I am familiar with all of the popular review materials including Kaplan, ExamKrackers, The Princeton Review, and the Berkeley Review, as well as the formal AAMC review material and practice exams. I have helped many students improve their score on the exam, including both those enrolled in review courses or self-studying.

I can help with content, review strategies, and tactics for improving performance on the real thing.

Organic Chemistry

I took the full organic chemistry sequence two years ago from the University of Colorado - Denver and finished with the top grade each semester. Beyond that, I teach a summer course for freshman that will be taking organic chemistry the following fall. I have tutored organic and biochemistry extensively and scored in the 99th percentile on the biological sciences section of the MCAT, which tests both subjects.

Physics

I have an undergraduate degree in physics from Colorado State University and worked as a teaching assistant for the physics department while an undergraduate. I have also tutored introductory physics extensively at both the high school and college level. In addition, I have had a large degree of experience in preparing and studying for the MCAT and scored above the 99th percentile on the physical sciences section, which tests physics and chemistry.
