I am a PhD who has taught Math, Computer, Placement testing (e.g. SAT, ACT, etc.), Education, Astronomy, and Economics. I have taught in colleges, high schools, homes (private tutoring), and other venues. I am an academic and a Christian who enjoys helping students reach their goals as they enjoy the learning process.
I believe in being a "guide on the side" rather than a "sage on the stage." When the student engages in real world problem solving, learning becomes more meaningful and lasts for a lifetime. I believe in a Zone of Proximal Development for each student, so that they are constantly challenged, but in a way that allows them to progress step by step -- so that they are encouraged as they see their understanding of a subject grow at a steady pace. I like for them to be involved in the planning of their progress so that they have a sense of ownership of their learning.
I have availability evenings and on weekends and I also available by phone if a student needs immediate assistance. Bob takes as much time as I need to explain concepts in an easy way that I understand. He is very patient and knows the material. He is flexible in the times he can meet which helps me with my schedule.
I will admit I was skeptical at first, Bob had a much lower price than everyone else listed. But on our first meeting, he was prompt, patient, and very helpful.
We met a total of 6-8 times over the course of a few months and it was exactly what I needed.
I spent time each week after our session going over my weak points. On each follow up session I improved.
Bob truly understands what is needed for a student to succeed on the GRE.
Bob is helping me with statistics. He's great at working with older students that have gone back to school.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I recently took the SAT and scored at the 98 percentile. I can show you techniques to achieve your highest score on SAT or ACT.
I scored at the 98 percentile on the SAT this year in the combined Math and English scores. I can help you to achieve higher scores on the ACT or SAT as well.
I am well versed in sets, functions and relations, matrix algebra, probability, graph theory, logic, mathematical induction, and algorithmic thinking. I am also familiar with Boolean algebra, linear programming, and number theory. I think of discrete mathematics simply as the mathematics that is necessary for decision making in non-continuous situations. I have taught math for 25 years including teaching college Finite Math. I have a master's degree in Operations Research.
I have a doctorate in Education. My studies included a deep understanding of how students of all ages learn best. I have also taught various subjects for Mathnasium, Club Z, and Sylvan, in which we focused on K-6 students. I currently teach 5 and 6-year-olds part time for Waterstone.
I have been playing the guitar and performing for audiences for 50 years. I have tutored novice guitar players once in a while for over 30 years. I have excellent pitch and I come from a family of musicians.
I have been using Outlook for about 15 years and I have been teaching for 30 years. I have a PhD in Education. For teaching Microsoft Outlook, I would start with how to: Create and manage file folders; Add and use contacts; perform Calendar basics; Use Fonts, hyperlinks, and spell check; Recall and replace sent messages; Send automatic replies when out of the office; Send and open attachments; Use instant search; and a host of other functions.
I am especially proficient in girls' soccer, as I was a part of a soccer program my daughter participated in for 13 years. I was an assistant soccer coach for part of that time. I am familiar with the rules and the winning strategies of the game.
As a teacher for 25 years, it has been very important for my students to know and understand study skills. As a PhD, I have had to develop study skills for myself to maximize my learning. I would be glad to tutor anyone to improve their study skills.
Having acted and directed in a number of plays, I have a heart for theatre and would love to share this with others. Each one of us is gifted with unique skills; the challenge of a theatre tutor is to help the student identify and develop the unique gifts that they can bring to a performance. I have taught children's theater for the past three years.
