About Jonathan

My ACT/SAT students have earned over $500,000 in scholarships and they consistently score 26-36 (ACT), 1200+ (SAT) & improve 2 letter grades in class. My 2016-2017 students earned ACT scores from 24 to 34 (these students earned a 34, 33, 33, 33, 30, 29, 29, 28, 27, 26, 26, 26, and 24 respectively; a range of 74th to 99th percentile) and SAT scores of 1150, 1290, 1400, 1580, and 1580. While I always recommend at least 10 lessons, I've had dozens of students make huge gains (3 to 6 ACT points and 100+ SAT points) in 1 to 3 tutoring sessions. My composite ACT score this year is a 35.

Nearly every one of my students earn A's in their Science (Chemistry, Physics, Biology) and Math (Algebra, Geometry, Trig, Calculus) courses or improves by 1-3 letter grades mid-semester. I also offer help with graduate exams including the GRE and PCAT (my scores are in the 94-99th percentile).

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring method works by helping students learn content, concepts, problem-solving, and test-taking skills while developing the confidence they need to succeed (confidence is surprisingly important!). I listen carefully to my students and develop strategies that work well for them as individuals. Each student is unique and every session is personalized depending on which area they need help on. My teaching approach is patient, leaving time for learning to unfold. I often use what is called the Socratic Method of teaching, guiding students to the correct answer with a series of questions instead of simply giving them the answer. This method has been extensively researched by learning scientists, many of whom believe it is the best way for students to learn. It leads to higher retention of material and better understanding of concepts. When time is of the essence, I teach students more rapidly by showing how to do the problem or what they did incorrectly, then have them show their understanding by completing another example problem.

I have several reviews from parents and students available in the Testimonials section.

About Me:

I'm a lifelong learner and love to help others not only understand the material they are learning, but enjoy learning about it and applying it to the real world. I have two Bachelor of Science degrees: one in Biochemistry and a second in Psychology from Metropolitan State University of Denver. I was a Teaching Assistant & Supplemental Instructor for a total of 6 semesters in subjects including Chemistry, Math, and Psychology. I was also a Research Assistant for my Biochemistry and Neuroscience professors. In my time doing research, I had the good fortune to work with a biochemist at my university to help develop a novel toxin sensor and have our work published in a scientific journal. Despite my science background, I still love math just as much (just don't tell my professors). I feel extremely lucky to be able to teach these amazing subjects to my students, have a positive impact in their lives, and share what makes me enjoy them so much.

Thank you for your time and good luck on your journey to success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I've tutored dozens of students to scores of over 30, and many more who have increased their scores 3-8 points. Once recent example is my student Ben, who started with a 24 composite before studying with me. He earned a 29 composite after 7 sessions with me, and I'm continuing to work with him in his attempt to score 30 or higher to make him eligible for college scholarships.

Algebra 1

I've been teaching Algebra and many other math subjects for my entire tutoring career. It's the first subject I started teaching over 5 years ago and is one of my most popular subjects. I'm confident in all areas of algebra and can help you or your student get the results you're looking for.

Algebra 2

I've been teaching Algebra and many other math subjects for my entire tutoring career. It's the first subject I started teaching over 5 years ago and is one of my most popular subjects. I'm confident in all areas of algebra and can help you or your student get the results you're looking for.

Calculus

Calculus is by far my favorite subject to teach. One of the main reasons is because it has a reputation for being difficult -- but it can be made so simple! I enjoy making Calculus easy for students and am excited at every opportunity I have to tutor Calculus.

Chemistry

Chemistry was the first subject I taught professionally as a tutor. I peer-taught students at the university I attended in Chemistry I, II, and Analytical Chemistry for 4 semesters. My students had an average increase of 1.5 letter grades and had a final grade up to 2 letter grades higher than their peers.

Elementary Math

I've been teaching Algebra and many other math subjects for my entire tutoring career. It's the first subject I started teaching over 5 years ago and is one of my most popular subjects. I'm confident in all areas of algebra and can help you or your student get the results you're looking for.

Organic Chemistry

I excelled in my Organic Chemistry courses, and have also successfully synthesized the anti-seizure drug Dilantin in my Organic Chemistry 2 Lab. During college I was a Supplemental Instructor in chemistry at my university for 4 semesters.

Physics

Aside from mathematics, physics is my favorite subject to teach. I've helped several students bring their failing grades up to B's and C's and bring C's up to A's.

Precalculus

Calculus is by far my favorite subject to teach. One of the main reasons is because it has a reputation for being difficult -- but it can be made so simple! It's a great feeling to be able to make Calculus easy for students when they were feeling like it was the most difficult subject they've ever experienced. I get very excited at every opportunity I have to tutor Calculus.

Excellent support!

Jonathan is smart, professional, patient and very thorough. My Chaparral HS junior earned a 31 on her ACT the first time she took it! He is once again supporting us as she prepares for SAT. As a teacher myself, I highly recommend Jonathan!
