Everyone comes to the tutoring experience with different cultures, no matter how long they or their family has been in our country. We must honor our students, their culture and heritage as much as we honor our own. They may change their values, or ideas over the process of time, but as a tutor, we will show them what they want and need from our culture, and let them, as adults, determine what they will keep and integrate into their lives.
Learning is based on process not product. Activities and interaction reading and writing provides students with the process-based learning that will include not only reading English, but also understanding it as well. Speaking, reading and writing any language does not mean that there has been understanding, just imitating. If we don't bring understanding with us on this journey for our students, we have accomplished nothing.
I have tutored in math in my undergraduate school at Youngstown State University. In fact I was recommended as a tutor in math by most of the students. I was a graduate assistant in graduate school and taught undergraduate students. After graduate school and awaiting employment I graded homework problems for various classes. I taught limited scope x-ray, algebra, and nursing courses at Parks College. I have experience in teaching undergraduate courses having taught a senior level physics course at the Arapahoe Community College.
