In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In addition to working commercially in InDesign, I also taught it for two semesters and tutored students at RRCC. I taught as a part of the Multi-media Graphic Design department at Red Rocks. I was an instructor at RRCC for four years.
As teacher, I have worked with an Aspergers student and was told by his parents afterward that I was the best instructor that he'd worked with. I have tutored students with Aspergers as well as students with other learning disabilities. I have extreme patience and find that students readily connect with and relate to me.
In addition to having taken a number of art courses, I have drawn throughout my life. I have an AAS in commercial art and have done professional illustrations.
One of the first students that I tutored professionally was severely dyslexic. I helped her primarily with math and reading. She has since then become an avid reader. As a tutor at RRCC, many of my students had difficulty with reading and math very often due to dyslexia.
I have Meniere's disease which means that I suffer also from hearing loss. I wear hearing aids and fully understand the frustration of the hearing impaired. I have also worked with a student through an interpreter whose first language is ASL.
I taught intro to computers for graphics with main focus on use of Macintosh at RRCC for four years. I have been a Mac user since they first became available. My current OS is Snowleopard. Additionally, I have an iPad and an iPhone.
I have shown my work in a number of venues as well as earning additional monies as a portrait artist.
As a tutor as well as an instructor at RRCC, my students have had a number of special needs. I have worked with Aspergers and dyslexia. I have worked with students who were from non-English speaking countries who are still learning English and had great difficulty with reading comprehension. I have also worked with a deaf student who used a sign language interpreter because ASL is his first language.
In at least two cases my students suffered from brain injuries as a result of auto accidents. One of those students suffered from short term memory loss.
