I am a native speaker of English, Japanese and Dutch, since my mother is Japanese, my father is American, and I grew up in the Netherlands. In May of 2014 I earned my Master of Divinity with honors from Denver Seminary. I did my undergrad in the Netherlands at University College Utrecht (international liberal arts and science college) and earned my BA Cum Laude with a focus on linguistics, religion and history, with intermediate level French.
I teach beginner/intermediate Japanese, ESL and Dutch. I have tutored middle school students, high school students, and adults. I have worked with learners for whom English is their second language and with native students who needed help with editing graduate level papers. Having studied various languages (English, Japanese, Dutch, German, French, Latin, Greek, Hebrew and Korean), I can identify with those who are studying a new language, and with those who are fine-tuning their language. In addition to teaching languages, I enjoy discussing various topics with my students, such as literature, history, art, religion and their cultural backgrounds. Furthermore, I teach beginner/intermediate level violin to enthusiastic learners.
I would like to have consistent tutoring sessions with my students who are dedicated to improving their skills. I teach one hour sessions and the traveling expenses are included in my hourly rate. I look forward to meeting you and beginning a tutoring-relationship with you! My fifteen year old daughter is taking Japanese lessons with Emiko and cannot wait for each time they meet. Emiko is kind, patient, and very knowledgeable. She helps guide my daughter through this complicated language in a way that keeps her engaged and excited. Thank you for your time, Emiko!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
This past May I have graduated from seminary with a Master of Divinity. In my program I have studied the Old and New Testaments in depth. I have also completed four semesters of Koine Greek, and three semesters of ancient Hebrew. In addition, I have studied systematic theology, which helps me to organize different doctrines based on relevant Scripture passages.
I am a native Dutch speaker, since I was born and raised in the Netherlands. In 2005, I graduated from the highest level of the Dutch high school educational system (vwo gymnasium). Dutch is spoken in the Netherlands, Belgium, and the Dutch Antilles, and a version of Dutch is spoken in South Africa, known as Afrikaans. The pronunciation of Dutch words can be quite challenging, but once mastered, it is a fun language to speak and converse in.
I am a native Japanese speaker, because I grew up speaking the language with my Japanese mother and I attended Japanese Saturday School and Japanese church. Therefore, I can teach conversational Japanese and basic writing and reading skills. I am also an experienced Japanese translator/interpreter, for those interested in improving their translation skills.
I studied the major world religions in undergrad, and I have traveled and lived in Thailand, India, Taiwan and Japan, where I have been exposed to the traditional practices of various religions. Currently I am a theology graduate student, and it is my desire to continue to reflect upon what it means to live in a religiously pluralistic society, and how different thoughts and ideas can be shared in mutually edifying ways.
I have played violin over twenty years, and have participated in various performances. I was trained to play the instrument by using the Suzuki method, which teaches students first to play the music by listening to the melody, before reading the notes. I have taught beginner and intermediate learners in the past, and I can teach the instrument in both English and Japanese.
