I am an experienced Math teacher having taught both in elementary and middle schools. My philosophy of teaching, when working with students who are having difficulty with math, is to start at their current level and build confidence in their ability to achieve success. Once a student's attitude changes from failure to success, new topics in the subject are introduced which are now usually found to be less "intimidating" than previously. My many years of experience are a benefit, as I know many "tricks" to teach students to help make math facts and methods easy to remember and even fun!
I have worked with Special Education students, including some with Asperger's syndrome and Autism, as well as with General Education students. I have been successful with all of them.
In addition to teaching math, I have also worked with numerous youngsters who are behind in reading. From a second grader who was unable to read at all, to a sixth grader who was at a reading level far behind his classmates, I was instrumental in helping these and other students make great strides in this area of their academics.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught Algebra II during my teaching career and I have also worked individually with students who were having difficulty keeping up with their class. Sometimes, it is just a matter of presenting the material in a different way that allows a student to progress through the previously trouble-some material.
I have had a great deal of experience working with students who were diagnosed with Autism and others that were diagnosed with Aspergers. I am knowledgeable in the various difficulties that these students experience when working in a school or private learning setting. I learned, from working with these students, that they have certain sensitivities that make learning a challenge. It could be bright lights, it could be harsh noises or it could just be anxiety.
I am soft-spoken, very patient and try to alleviate any anxiety by making sure that a student totally understands the material that is being taught through much repetition and a relaxed atmosphere during the lessons. When preparing a student for a class situation, I have found that role-playing the teacher-student interaction works very well. By having the student totally familiar with the questions that will be asked etc., the anxiety of an otherwise uncomfortable situation is relieved. These methods have proven to be successful with my students.
I have been a paraprofessional in an elementary school for the past 4 years. I am a patient, soft-spoken, gentle person who can find the right technique to help your child understand basic academic concepts. I am well traveled and can share experiences to give your child some global knowledge. Math and Reading are my primary areas of expertise and I have been very successful in helping students make notable gains in these subjects. I also play a musical instrument, which means I can even assist in the area of general music. If your student has a Learning Disability, I have experience in that area also. I have worked with many Special Education students including some with Autism and some with Aspergers syndrome. I know how important it is to have your child up to grade level in the early years and I hope to have the opportunity to help your child reach his/her potential.
I taught math for a number of years and was a paraprofessional with both the Cherry Creek School District and the Douglas County School District working in their Special Education department with elementary students.
I teach reading by finding out the students main interests and then choosing reading material that they are going to be eager to read. Choosing the correct reading level is also very important, as a child can become easily frustrated if the books are beyond them.
