I'm a lifelong learner who enjoys sharing my passion for learning with others. I enjoy teaching and I'm patient with students. I focus on coaching students on the learning process as well as the content. I believe that every student is unique and work with each to find approaches to learning, studying and academic success that are attuned to their individuality.
I attended a private college prep high school. I took 7 AP courses in high school and work with students taking AP classes. I earned a B.A. from Rice University and have an MBA from CU-Boulder. Most of my career has been as a Management Consultant, IT Consultant, or Technical Sales Rep to companies and government agencies.
I tutor students in Middle School and up through high school, college, graduate school, as well as executives.
I'm a full-time tutor. If you're a high school senior or college student with open periods/time during the day, we may be able to find a time during the day to meet.
My mindset in working with students is that through my mentoring and coaching I provide my students with an essential freedom: the "freedom to choose" their future, rather than have it chosen for them, as free will is one of the many God-given gifts we all receive. I believe that students, parents and educators have an obligation to discover and develop the many gifts with which students are born. I see my role as that of a mentor and coach in the art and science of learning, and when the opportunity arises, providing life coaching to students at a critical time in their life.
For students looking for help in developing their writing, I've written two books (through CreateSpace) that can be found on Amazon: "5 Big Ideas for Cradle Catholics" and "What is Love? A How-to Guide" Each book is available as a free PDF download. If interested, contact me for the download website.
Here are subjects I've tutored quite a bit recently:
Finance for undergrad and grad students (discounting, bond pricing, company valuation, etc.)
Pre-Calculus/Trig, AP Calculus AB/BC, College Calculus, Business Calculus
ACT/SAT / PRAXIS / ASVAB / GMAT/GRE Test Prep
Entrepreneurial Finance April 2017: Worked with a student to prepare for Final Exams. The student was able to earn an A- in the class.
ASVAB April: 2017 (2 students increased scores, received offers): One Navy, One Coast Guard
ASVAB March 2017: High School Senior increased her ASVAB score from 44 to 66, enabling her to "delay enlist" in the program of her choice in the Air Force.
Precalculus/Trig Feb/March 2017: Turned around low grade to a B.
ASVAB January 2017: I worked with a student in another state twice each week over Skype in November and December 2016. She then studied in January 2017 using the same process and increased her ASVAB score from 29 to "the 60s", enabling her to qualify for the Air Force (subject to passing the physical).
ASVAB January 2017: I worked with a student over the course of more than 18 months to increase his ASVAB score from a 6 on the pretest to a 62 on the actual test, an amazing increase. This score enabled the student to enlist in the Marines, with a choice of multiple jobs. The key to success was a combination of factors: 1) the student took Algebra 1 his senior year in high school, and he worked hard to thrive in the course, 2) he worked through lots of practice problems (sometimes the same problems more than once over time) and we reviewed incorrect responses, 3) the student took the steps to perform at his best on test day (sleep, nutrition, etc.), and 4) we prayed to God for help (combining action with prayer).
ACT Testing October 2016: I worked with one student to prepare for the ACT and he raised his score by 9 points to a 32. This is the biggest increase I've seen. How did this happen? The student didn't prepare for the previous test while he worked diligently to prepare for the October test. The student is bright and learns quickly. He worked through 3 complete practice tests publicly available on my website and all three practice tests in the new "2016-2017" official red prep book. Another student I worked with focused on increasing his reading score and increased that score by 4 points to a 25 for that subtest. He also worked through multiple practice tests on my website and worked through the practice reading tests from the newest official prep book.
ACT Testing September 2016: One student prepared for the ACT over the summer before Senior year and increased his composite score from 15 to 20. Another student prepared for the ACT in April 2016 scoring a 29. The student continued to prepare for the ACT in the Fall to increase her score to a 31 (and a 32 Superscore).
AP Testing 2016: Coached one student who scored a 5 on the AP Calculus AB test (Regis HS). Coached another student who scored a 4 on the AP Physics 1 test (Grandview HS). We made heavy use of practice tests and analyzing the results of practice tests to prepare for the AP tests.
ACT: Student increased composite score from 24 to 31. I met with the student during their open period during the day for 1-2 hours each week.
Calculus (course required for graduation): Metro student earned a "B" in Business Calculus (June-Aug prep before course start, Sep-Dec 2015). Lesson learned: It's wise to begin preparing for a Calculus course before the course starts, Calculus takes time to absorb.
A Note on Communications:
If you send an email or text on a Sunday or even on a Saturday, you may not receive a response until Monday. We are designed by God to work diligently for 6 days and then rest on the seventh day. I recommend the same for you. :) Take one day off each week and rest.

We have found Patrick to be an excellent tutor. He is extremely knowledgeable regarding testing methods, content, etc, and has been able to determine our grandaughter's mode of learning. He is timely, responsible, kind and thorough and has been of great help. He is the best tutor we have ever had and we are very pleased and feel confident that he has helped our granddaughter immeasurably.
I have tutored with Patrick numerous times, and have never been disappointed. He is incredible knowledgable, and is very patient, his style of teaching is a perfect balance between to little, and to much help. Patricks knowledge of Excel, in the simplest terms, is mind boggling, he seems to have a complex understanding of every aspect within the program. Above all, Patrick is a great guy, he is very respectful, very easy going, and honestly enjoys helping people learn. I would highly Patrick, you will not be disappointed.
Patrick really took the time to get to know me and my goals and create a customized learning plan. We jumped right into the stuff I needed to work on and he left me with key action items for next time.
Patrick was helpful in getting our teen over the end of the year hump in math and ending with a great grade on the final exam. We're now working with him to help our incoming Freshman prepare for high school. We'd highly recommend Patrick.
He made it very simple to understand the overall concepts. I was getting lost in the formulas. Wonderful experience, would recomend Patrick to anyone who is a "non-math" person!
Patrick has tutored both my son and daughter throughout high school in college algebra, pre-calc & chemistry. He has made a huge difference not only In my childrens' GPAs but in their confidence in the classroom. Both of my children seriously brag about how brilliant Patrick is and that there isn't anything that he doesn't know... honestly their words not mine. Both of my children say Patrick explains and teachs in a manner that works for them individually, the way they need to learn. My daughter will be a junior in college and my son is graduating from high school this year. When Patrick told my son he would be able to continue helping with him in college online my son was truly excited and relieved to know he would still be able to rely on Patrick's help for his more challenging subjects. Without Patrick's tutoring my children would have struggled a great deal to reach the success they achieved. Patrick has been a very trustworthy and positive person. He has been working with my children for 3 - 4 years. I honestly cannot say enough about what a truly awesome tutor and great person he is!
Patrick has the ability to explain complex concepts in a way that is understandable.
He is extremely patient.
Previously, Patrick assisted me in preparing for a final in a challenging Finance class where I was struggling with a C. Not only was I able to raise my grade to an A-, but I came away with a solid understanding of the course material and concepts.
Thanks Patrick for all the time you've spent with Morgan. The hard work paid off and he's now off the Coast Guard. I really appreciate your help and guidance getting him ready for the test.
Patrick had some very helpful tips about taking the SAT. He definitely helped me prepare. He explains things in a thorough way that isn't overwhelming.
Patrick is wonderful with my son, and is helping him learn how to solve complex math problems. Jack is becoming more confident in his abilities as well. Thank you so much Patrick!
Patrick has been a great support for our HS Jr in AP Calculus. He is very knowledgeable and easy to understand.
We appreciate his availability in public places - having a 16 year old meet a stranger is daunting.
Would absolutely recommend him!
Provided an overview of Cost Accounting.
He was very patient and detailed in his explanations. He provided enough knowledge so that I was able to completed the assignment on my own with confidence.
My daughter has been struggling all semester in her AP Statistics class. We were fortunate to find Patrick. He explained concepts in a way that finally made sense to her. He is relaxed, patient, and kind. My daughter is looking forward to continuing to work with him.
Patrick, apart from being an amazing teacher, give exceptionally thorough, clear and regular feedback, both to the kids, and the parents. Not hesitating to reach to the the parents separately if need be.
Patrick is fantastic ! We are very happy to have him as our tutor. He is extremely smart, nice, and comes through for us every time.
Patrick tailored his lesson toward my son's needs. He is knowledgeable, welll prepared and an excellent educator. He was sets student goals and expectations for ACT study which keeps my son on track with his test preparation. Excellent tutor!
My daughter has loved working with Patrick for ACT tests! He has been able to help her figure out when she missed a problem what she is doing wrong on practice tests .and offer guidance !
We worked with Patrick for the summer and we got much more than we were hoping for. Patrick creates very effective work plans for his students and time in sessions is always very productive. Patrick sends out detailed daily reports on each session and this really helped me keep track of all the work being done.
I highly recommend Patrick for your student. He is by far one of the best and most organized tutors we have ever worked with.
It was our initial meeting. I was looking to just meet him and see if he would be a good fit for the trigonometry my daughter was going in to next year. I thought it was a meeting that would set up times after school started.
Instead with my daughter case he suggested learning trig before school started that way she had an understanding going in. I did not even fathom that my daughter would take that as a solution...
I love it..
She jumped right in the same day and really liked that he was easy to learn from.
My daughter found that he was great to work with and easy to understand.
He went above my expectations. Planning goals not only for her short term of passing the trig and eventually pre-calc, but also around her goals for college as well.
I look forward to seeing what accomplishments this will bring.
I had 2 other tutors before Patrick and he exceeded my expectations. ...he is very knowledgeable about the subject and explained the concepts easily so that I was able to understand and grasp the components and elements! He is patient and kind which not only is highly desired for students but also a luxury!
Mr. M is an amazing tutor. He has helped me refresh my math skills. I would highly recommend Mr. Mfor any academic issues you need help with.
5 stars +
My son worked with Patrick second semester of his sophomore year of high school for Calculus AB. He thought Patrick was very knowledgeable about the subject and he really enjoyed working with him. We had a very easy time scheduling appointments and communication was great.
We just received his AP score and he scored a 5 on the exam - I believe Patrick's tutoring contributed to his excellent score.
Our son is a recent High School graduate and is pursuing a career in the Coast Guard. We decided to reach out to get him some help in raising his ASVAB score.
After a few visits with other tutors we all were getting frustrated and discouraged with our outcomes. Until, we found Patrick. We definetly feel blessed and thankful we found Patrick. From our first conversation to the first session we have had with Patrick has been a positive, truthful and pleasant time. Patrick is organized, prepared and brings it all together very clearly. Isaiah left his first session with clear direction and with a sense of confidence.
I reached out to Patrick for a VERY last minute tutor session for my daughter's Algebra II final when her usual tutor was overbooked and couldn't accommodate us. He was very fast responding to my call for help and did a wonderful job working with my daughter. She is usually a b/c "tester" and scored a low A on her final. Yes, she worked very hard but the time spent with Patrick was essential to her feeling prepared and focused. I'd definitely recommend Patrick and I'm sure we will be working with him again as my daughter goes through her senior year.
Patrick was knowledgeable and spent a good bit of time before the session preparing to ensure he was helpful. Willing to break away from his plan to ensure my questions were answered.
Helped me prepare for my Calculus BC exam and has been really helpful! He is also really knowledgeable and a great person
overview of calc, processes of defining equations, tangents, simplify calc problems,
finding critical points, intervals, and absolutes, relative min max points, and derivatives
Patrick is very organized and knows a lot about the testing process. He explained concepts to my son in a way that made it much easier for him to understand them. We will definitely work with him again.
Patrick taught me the material and made sure I understood it before we even looked at the questions I had for my specific class. I loved this approach because it helped me truly learn the material and prepare for the AP test rather than just giving me the answer. Definitely recommend him as a tutor!
We originally enlisted Patrick's help for my teen daughter to help with Algebra that had become too complicated for her parents to help her with - LoL! This worked out great, and I am pleased that my girl just got her trimester grade back and it was an A! We were very pleased to discover that Patrick is also able to help her with her Chemistry. He is so patient and has quite a gift of communication. Thanks so much for helping us, Patrick! We highly recommend Patrick!
My daughter brought in a rather hard problem of the week and had never sought help from a tutor like this until now. Patrick taught my daughter not just how to solve this problem but more importantly how to think through multi step problems in general--in other words he really has a firm handle on how to successfully teach how to think. He is obviously gifted and puts the student at great ease and really engages with the student. Loved his personality, demeanor, and the supplementary help material and links to useful sites. We found "the one"!
My son is having a very good experience with Patrick, and gaining more confidence in his own knowledge and understanding of the material. Patrick is a blessing in our lives
My son went from sort of getting Chemistry to a 96% on the final and an A in the class. Thank you Patrick!
First meeting went well. Patrick made a real effort to get to know our student and mentor him on what it takes to be a good math student.
I'm the parent of a student who has been working with my son for a year. He continues to plug along with my son at my son's pace, and I cannot believe how much my son is understanding and growing! He started working with him on ASVAB, but recently has just been focusing on Algebra with him with bits of other ASVAB material thrown in. He has a great ability to make a subject very understandable, is super calm, patient, and relates to kids very well without being patronizing. I recommend him highly.
Patrick has worked with my son off and on for a couple of years. He is really making a difference in my son's life. We hope to use him through college.
Great tutor/coach, gets down to the point and explains in a great way that is easy to understand. He focuses on learning style of the student and then uses that to get the subject to be more easily understood. Excellent resource.
Patrick is very patient with my slow learning pace and is a great tutor. I now see him weekly for my summer courses because it's definitely helpful
He has taught me many things. He also has helped me build up skills I have not used in a very long time. For example, long division with decimals numbers, and mixed number, as well as improper fractions.
Almost a year ago, my son began working with Patrick. We selected Patrick because of the extraordinarily positive feedback and consistently high ratings he had received on the WyzAnt website. Our selection of Patrick proved to be a very positive and life-altering decision for my son.
Patrick offers an extraordinary and unusual combination of talents. First, he is a consummate educational professional. He has absolute mastery of the subjects he teaches. Of equal importance, he possesses a remarkable capacity for truly reaching and connecting with young people. In fact, I believe that it was Patrick's empathy, patience and genuine investment in my son that made their academic progress possible. My son had years of built up frustration with academics and there were some real obstacles to getting started. With the trust and respect that Patrick established, they began to work very productively together.
Patrick's work with my son resulted in his increased self-confidence in his academic potential, learning work ethic, learning skills and techniques - not too mention the large strides that were made in the areas of mathematics, chemistry, reading comprehension and test prep for the ACT.
At forty-eight years old, I have never encountered someone so committed to kids and their learning. Patrick never treated his sessions as simple transactional interactions. He wanted, and built, a relationship with my son. All of his efforts clearly showed my son that he genuinely cares about him. One wonders if our schools had more committed, caring people like Patrick available to teach, coach and inspire them...
We plan to remain in touch with Patrick until our son completes college. My only regret is that I did not find Patrick sooner.
For those reading this review, I cannot more highly recommend Patrick. You would be blessed to have him work with your son or daughter.
My sophomore son is responding well to Patrick. I am most impressed with the summary info and to-do lists that he writes up for each lesson. They are very detailed so I am able to keep up with my son's lessons and assignments. Patrick spends quite a bit of his own time putting this info together. Also, while not tutoring him in Spanish, he keeps with my son's assignments in order to help him with his study habits.
Patrick is an excellent tutor. I highly recommend him for your tutoring needs. He made my daughter feel comfortable and confident during her tutoring sessions. Patrick showed her how to maneuver through each subject of the ACT exam. My daughter was given websites to go to for practice drills as well as he taught her how to really think a problem through to get the correct answers. During each practice test that was given to her by Patrick, improvement was shown, he took the time to review each test taken and went into detail on each incorrect answer. Arranging sessions was also convenient and easy to schedule. Patrick is a very knowledgeable, extremely nice individual. I would not hesitate to call him again for my daughter tutoring needs.
PS: my daughter felt really confident when she took the ACT test for the second time thanks to Patrick
My son met with Patrick for first time on Sat 9/6 and felt much better about his stats test. He has confidence in Patrick and feels that the tutoring will be very helpful. Patrick did a great job!
Patrick worked with my son for a month and helped him to significantly raise his ASVAB score so that he now qualifies for some of the navy jobs which really interest him. Patrick's kind and patient manner helped to hold his interest in subjects (math) that he struggled with in the past. We highly recommend Patrick!
Very accommodating. I've had to switch some times and he has been flexible. He is also willing to meet downtown. Lots of knowledge of math. Provides me with lots of opportunities to practice difficult math concepts as I prepare for the GMAT. Also has given me a study plan to help me schedule GMAT studying during my busy weeks.
Patrick is the best tutor. He takes the time and special attention that is needed for his students. We would highly recommend him!
Patrick demonstrated a very unique skill which many of us lack – the ability to communicate with maximum effect! Patrick and my 16 y/o son work exceptionally well together. Patrick had a unique calm but very caring leadership style. His personal uplifting was instrumental in my son acquiring more self-esteem while working through Honors Geometry problems. By providing critical support to my son in a time-sensitive environment (just prior to mid-term exams) Patrick worked tirelessly and drove a long distance (Approximately 80-miles round trip) to work with my son to in preparation for his midterm exam which he took with increased accuracy/results.
While tutoring, Patrick performed flawlessly and was always on time!
It is my privilege, and without reservation, that I give my strongest recommendation for parents to call on Mr. Patrick M. to work with their children under this tutoring program.
Patrick was tremendous. Since a lot of what I was having issues with in the economics class was calculus based he started with a calculus lesson. This widening of the subject helped me to understand why I needed to apply the calculus in the first place. He had a very good demeanor and was highly knowledgeable on the specific economic topic. He helped me with the topic, the calculations and how to structure in excel.
Not only did he help me during the lesson, but when I was completing the assignment later I had a question and he didn't hesitate to respond. I would highly recommend him and will schedule lessons in the future when the need arises.
We have been very impressed with Patrick's thoroughness and willingness to research items related to our daughter's study issues. He's done a great job.
Patrick helped me with a difficult statistics project, explaining concepts and making sure I understood the material. I will definitely contact him again if I need help.
Patrick really works hard and goes the extra mile to teach my son Geometry. I am extremely grateful to have him around.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took the ACT in June 2012 and scored 32, which is the 97th percentile. There were a few questions that I didn't get to as I ran out of time. I did not guess on those, although I would recommend guessing to my students as there is no penalty on the ACT for guessing.
My approach to coaching for all standardized tests is holistic: content for sure, but also strategy, guessing, calculator selection and usage, nutrition and sleep. For those who believe in God I remind them to pray. Prayer and action are a strong combination.
I have previously assisted two students in preparing for the AFOQT (Air Force Officer Qualifying Test).
I am familiar with the unique components of this test, including the more advanced math topics that are tested as well as the concepts that are tested that are relevant to pilots.
Algebra is the on-ramp to college and the professions, and it is a subject that I began teaching in the middle of Spring Semester 2012 and will continue teaching.
Robert Moses calls math and algebra the ticket to 21st century citizenship, and I would agree. It is the foundation upon which all other secondary and college math and science success will be built, so it is of strategic importance to every student.
I focus on working with students to understand the "why" not just the "how", so the "how" will stick.
My goal is to help students master the subject so that it is a source of strength for their academic and professional career, not a weakness that hinders their future.
If you would like to get into the military but struggle with the ASVAB or believe it may be a hurdle to military entrance I can help you. If you are shooting for eligibility of a specific career I can also help.
I recently worked with one high school grad and increased her ASVAB score 25% in one month.
I have tutored many students in Statistics. Some of those students have been in the biosciences field, so by necessity I have tutored students on the application of statistics to the biosciences; that is, biostatistics.
I have a Master's in Business Administration (MBA) from University of Colorado-Boulder, Colorado's flagship university.
I have started more than one business, at least one of which is successful, and consulted a number of Fortune 500 business as a management consultant.
I can help you understand Calculus and even learn to enjoy it. Whether you are in College and taking Calculus or High School taking AP Calculus, I can get you from the point of struggling to being ahead of the class, comfortable with the class and your abilities, and, in the case of AP Calculus, prepared for the test.
I have developed proprietary materials and methods to help you quickly go from where you are now to where you need to be.
For example: I have just developed materials to help English Language Learners learn AP Calculus.
I teach chess to middle school students as an elective as there are substantial benefits to students from a behavioral and mathematical perspective. My teaching is rigorous and includes Algebraic Chess Notation, all allowable moves (en passant, castling, etc.), strategy, tactics, pattern recognition, etc. My focus is on getting students who have never played chess to the point where they can begin playing in tournaments, at which point they can find another teacher to take them to the advanced/expert level.
I have helped a number of students apply for college, from college selection, application development, and essay writing. I have experience with the Common Application as well as specific applications for some colleges.
I can help students struggling with Singapore Math understand how to build models to solve problems.
I can help students increase their "Mental Math" capability that will enable them to do more math, more quickly, and more reliably.
I can administer a diagnostic test that helps me identify a particular student's math strengths, weaknesses, and gaps. I then develop a custom plan to fill in the gaps and shoring up the weaknesses.
I can provide challenge to elementary (and high school) students that are not being challenged, introducing them to Calculus, Statistics, Probability, etc. in a way that they can understand given their current understanding of math.
I have an MBA and can tutor any of the typical graduate level or college level Finance classes:
Corporate Finance: Present Value, Net Present Value, Bond Pricing, Bond Duration, Internal Rates of Return, Calculating Expected Returns, Portfolio Variances, Covariances,Calculating Beta, WACC, etc.
Derivatives: Rocket science level math to model derivatives, swaps, futures, etc.
I scored 720 on the GMAT after being away from school for 20 years and have developed a specific approach to preparation which can help you increase your GMAT score. While the approach is the same for each individual, I tune it based on the requirements of each student for maximum impact.
I have worked with a number of International Students to help them prepare for this test.
I worked with a student to develop her Chemistry and Physics understanding, enabling her to increase her MCAT score from approximately the 50th to approximately the 70th percentile (score of 500 to 505).
I recently passed the PRAXIS math test for Secondary School Math Teachers (High School and Middle School) at the score required to pass in the State of Colorado, which is the highest score requirement of any state. I used the same standardized test strategies, techniques and approaches to pass this test in the first attempt that I use with students.
I have just completed a graduate school course in teaching reading. As a result of the course I have developed a strategy to help students of all ages build their ability to read and write in English.
While our brains are genetically wired to learn to speak languages, reading and writing must be taught, as there is no genetic wiring for reading or writing.
English is one of the most difficult languages to learn how to read and write for a few reasons: 1) the English vocabulary is much larger than most other languages. Researchers at Harvard and Google just calculated the English language at 1,022,000 words and growing by about 8,500 words per year, 2) English spelling is a mess, with more than 1,100 spelling rules (compare that to Spanish's 46). These challenges don't arise when listening and speaking a language but arise when reading and writing.
My strategy for improving English reading capabilities takes into account these challenges as well as each student's specific background, strengths, weaknesses, and goals. The solution harnesses modern technologies to address the challenges, taking into account strengths and weaknesses, and achieving goals in a novel and engaging way.
Developing good study skills become increasingly important as students progress through school. I help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and work with them to develop a plan for learning that fits their individual traits. I also teach students specific approaches that are used by the best students to 1) increase memorization capability, 2) focus on what is important, and 3) increase their proficiency in taking standardized tests.
