Tarkio College (Psych, Spec. Ed, Ed.)
University of Missouri Columbia Campus (Master's)
I have been a special educator and consultant for over 16 years. My background includes successful work with students with autism, developmental disabilities, and behavioral/mental illness challenges. In the course of my teaching, I have developed reading, writing, social skills, and math programs which have proactively addressed individual and small group goals. Students I have taught range in age from 3 to 60!
One program I developed in the early nineties for persons (adolescent to retirement) with developmental disabilities and behavioral or mental illness challenges received national attention because it positively worked. This work also culminated into assistant professorship status at UCD for the Co-Top program for para-educator training.
While I have many years of happy memories as a public school teacher, the most rewarding work has always been with the student and his or her family. I received my B.A. from Tarkio College, Tarkio, Missouri in 1976, majoring in Psychology, Special Education, and Elementary Education. Since that time, students and their families have taught me so much as well, and inspired me to learn as much as possible. My M.A. was earned in Special Education (Secondary Transition Issues) in 1993.
I am also an author of children's books, and am credited as an editor of manuals for teachers published through Hawthorne Educational Services. Virtually all of my published writing has focused on proactive and non-punitive ways of managing challenges, including bullying. You are welcome to type in my writing name, Becky Ray McCain, for reviews of some of my work. Because I write, I also teach writing, and have helped creative 4th & 5th graders establish some very cool after school writers' clubs to further hone their talents.
The philosophy underlying all of my teaching is twofold. First, every student has gifts, and is important. Right up there by first, every family member is important, so we work as a team. I do vary rates as much as possible because you have enough on your plates in this current economy. I do look forward to hearing from you!

Becky really knows how to connect with kids. Our son is making great progress and enjoys working with her. I would highly recommend Becky.
We are so pleased with Becky. She has picked up on the weak areas and works hard to make sure the lessons address the problems she sees. She makes sure we receive a summary of each lesson and the progress that has been made. She also makes sure my granddaughter sees what progress she is making, which is so important because her confidence is down because of her struggles in school. My granddaughter loves her and has really connected with her. We couldn't be happier about the whole experience.
Dec 20, 2012 We continue to be so pleased with Becky. My granddaughter is improving with each lesson. Becky works hard to make them enjoyable for her. We truly appreciate all that she does.
Mar 18, 2013 My granddaughter continues to make significant progress. She is up to grade level in reading now, and Becky has adjusted the lessons to focus a little more on math. We're so pleased with the progress she has made in the past 6 months she has been working with Becky. My granddaughter has made such a connection with her, even inviting her to her soccer game. Although the progress is reward enough, it's nice to see such a warm relationship developing between them. A child can never have enough positive adult role models!
Sept 4, 2013 Becky has been tutoring my granddaughter for almost a year now. Her reading level has improved several grade levels since that time. We couldn't be more thrilled. They continue to have a warm relationship and we really appreciate Becky's caring attitude. It's obvious from the planning that Becky does for each lesson, that she has a good grasp of where her student stands and is willing to do extra work to make sure that her lessons go along with what my granddaughter is doing in school. A great teacher and all around great person!
April 7, 2014 After only a year and a half, my granddaughter's reading level has increased over 4 grade levels. She is now completely up to grade level. Becky has been fantastic! Although we originally hired her just for reading, we added an extra half hour for working on math or other homework assignments where help might be needed. I cannot say enough great things about Becky. She knows where my granddaughter stands on her schoolwork and works hard to customize her lessons. She invents games to keep things interesting. She's a lot of fun! She is not only a well qualified teacher, she is such a caring person! My granddaughter has connected with her so well. Although she's now up to grade level, we hope to have her keep working with Becky on a more limited schedule in order to keep her there. We've had a wonderful experience with Becky and feel we have gained a friend in the bargain!
Becky has been a wonderful tutor for my sixteen year old son. She seems to have limitless energy and patience. She shows up for work ready to put 110% in from the moment she arrives until the moment she leaves, and she makes sure that my son really understands the content -- not just completes the assignments.
She has a wealth of conceptual knowledge from her many years of teaching and is willing to approach learning from many different angles. Moreover, she brings a very positive attitude and energy to each of her sessions and focuses on the "whole child" -- building self-esteem as well as academic skills. I would highly recommend her to anyone seeking a competent and compassionate tutor who is extremely goal oriented.
Becky, you have continued to do a fantastic job working towards a way to help my student succeed. We have been very pleased with your ongoing efforts to find the best way for him to learn. I feel that you really care about his well being and his success. Thank you for doing such a fantastic job!
This week my daughter took our state testing. She said that Math was her favorite this year because she felt more prepared than she ever has before. This was an amazing statement coming from a girl who LOVES to read and write. I couldn't be happier with the work that Becky has done with my daughter. She really knows how to react to any mood that gets thrown her way and the lessons are always positive experiences. I would highly recommend Becky as a tutor.
My daughter reports that she is feeling more confident in math class, that she knows her times tables better and is able to do her work without being called to a special group to get additional help. I am glad to see her working so well with Becky. Becky has been working hard to make the lessons fun and in line with my daughter's interests and it is helping my daughter enjoy math more.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a writer, a teacher, and mother of three, I am familiar with most of the inventories and assessment used to evaluate students (including CSAP), which are used in elementary schools. While my teaching certificate is in special education, I do have B.A. majors in Elementary Education and Psychology, and years of experience working with students who may never qualify for or need special education, but do need tailored intervention and tutoring to succeed in and enjoy learning.
Additionally, with 3 gifted children of my own and a personal history of being labeled as such, I have, through the requests of teachers and parents alike, worked very successfully with gifted underachievers as well as children who are labeled gifted but have accompanying issues from mental health diagnosis and from Asperger's Syndrome. I look forward to helping you!
I have three years of work directly with adult students who are learning English as a Second Language. Because I primarily have worked with adults, the ESL tutoring services I offer are focused on issues adults face using English well enough to function in every day life, using English competently enough to attain and maintain employment, and assisting and editing writing for undergraduate and post graduate papers according to APA standards.
I currently have Colorado teacher's certification to teach students who have developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, and emotional or behavioral challenges from Kindergarten through graduation. I have over 15 years of experience teaching as a special educator, and have also worked as an educational consultant as well. My experience includes individual and group program designs, and these have produced very positive results.
All of my work is with the student and family as a team. Every student has special gifts, and needs that chance to shine!
