My favorite part of my career has been explaining statistical concepts to students, colleagues, and the general public. I've found that many people are nervous about statistics in their coursework and career. My job is to counter their apprehension and explain things in an accessible but fully correct way. My experience includes teaching graduate-level biostatistics to public health, nursing, pharmacy, and others students on a health sciences campus. I also mentored many students through their masters and Ph.D. in both statistical and non-statistical fields. Throughout this, my focus is on connecting real-world problems to the underlying statistical technique.
Across my career, I've worked in research groups as part of a small specialty hospital, a large non-profit research group, a medium-sized clinical trials consulting group, and a major research university. I've worked with SAS, SPSS, R, and Stata in my own research as well as teaching others. Statistically, I'm an "expert" in complex longitudinal and mixed-effects models, but think that the simplest approach (a t-test, for example) is often best because people actually understand that.
When I'm helping someone understand any complicated subject, math or science, I aim to find common ground between what a student already knows and what they need to know. I teach from a simple common explanation that works for the basic case and, with only a few changes, also fits more advanced cases. It's true, statistics is not always that easy, but I find a straightforward approach provides a solid foundation for understanding the tougher material.
I apply these same keep-it-simple approaches to my non-teaching work. For example, when evaluating the effect of an anti-smoking campaign across multiple states, we developed both traditional statistical models and small-scale simulations (known as agent-based models, coded in Java) in order to understand the actual decisions people make. The models were complicated, but the simulations helped scientific readers better u

Amazing teacher and very patient
There were some fundamental parts of statistics I did not fully understand and David was very patient and explained them to me. He didn’t make fun of me or talk down to me at all. He made me feel safe in asking questions and explaining problems clearlyChristina, 2 lessons with David
He knew about the topic!
I needed to reinforce my knowledge about interactions, relative risk, modified Poisson, he was very fast catching with the data I showed him, and helped me with my doubts.Maria, 1 lesson with David
He taught me many things in statistics and complex statistics programs. . He taught me many things in statistics and complex statistics programs. He was friendly and worked with me sincerely. He taught me important learnings in R. It was a useful and productive hour.. I will work with him again. Skilled in statistics.sarah, 2 lessons with David
Super helpful and reassuring!
I am working on a multilevel logit model for my PhD thesis and wanted to run my analysis assumptions, model, and interpretations past David before writing it up in a manuscript. David was incredibly helpful in pointing out some alternatives for my analysis and reassured me that I was on the right track. I wish I had reached out earlier for this helpful gut check rather than trying to interpret the Stata manual myself :). Would highly recommend!Nora, 1 lesson with David
Highly Expert, Patient, and Affable Tutor
David helped familiarize me with SPSS, which was previously a very overwhelming prospect for me. He clearly taught me how to perform statistical analyses with the program and how to work with my results. He even made working with stats fun! Our tutoring session was essential to my academic success. I highly recommend David, and I look forward to working with him again in the future.David, 1 lesson with David
With David's help I got my assignment done early!
David was super helpful and easy to work with. He helped me get through a stats assignment, and helped me to better understand the concepts as we went along. I actually had fun in the process!Samantha, 6 lessons with David
