My favorite part of my career has been explaining statistical concepts to students, colleagues, and the general public. I've found that many people are nervous about statistics in their coursework and career. My job is to counter their apprehension and explain things in an accessible but fully correct way. My experience includes teaching graduate-level biostatistics to public health, nursing, pharmacy, and others students on a health sciences campus. I also mentored many students through their masters and Ph.D. in both statistical and non-statistical fields. Throughout this, my focus is on connecting real-world problems to the underlying statistical technique.

Across my career, I've worked in research groups as part of a small specialty hospital, a large non-profit research group, a medium-sized clinical trials consulting group, and a major research university. I've worked with SAS, SPSS, R, and Stata in my own research as well as teaching others. Statistically, I'm an "expert" in complex longitudinal and mixed-effects models, but think that the simplest approach (a t-test, for example) is often best because people actually understand that.

When I'm helping someone understand any complicated subject, math or science, I aim to find common ground between what a student already knows and what they need to know. I teach from a simple common explanation that works for the basic case and, with only a few changes, also fits more advanced cases. It's true, statistics is not always that easy, but I find a straightforward approach provides a solid foundation for understanding the tougher material.

I apply these same keep-it-simple approaches to my non-teaching work. For example, when evaluating the effect of an anti-smoking campaign across multiple states, we developed both traditional statistical models and small-scale simulations (known as agent-based models, coded in Java) in order to understand the actual decisions people make. The models were complicated, but the simulations helped scientific readers better u

Econometrics

Econometrics

Econometrics are a dialect of statistics. For example, a panel study is just a subset of longitudinal studies, while time series reduce longitudinal to one subject with even more measurements. Heteroscedasticity is modelled, rather than being assumed away. After spending 6 out of my 19 post-PhD years working with economists, I can translate the whole world of statistics into the econometric dialect and back again.

SPSS

I received my MS and PhD in biostatistics and have been a practicing for more than 25 years. I've taught research methods courses at conference and graduate-level biostatistics. I've served on and mentored students for their MS and PhD theses.
STATA

STATA

For 3 years of my 20+ year statistical career, I taught biostatistical methods to MPH students, using Stata for all assignments. While Stata doesn't have the prettiest interface, it does have the most efficient code and the most accessible advanced procedures including super-easy (maybe, too easy) power and sample size computation. I'm ready, even excited, to share what I know.

Knowledgeable, patient, and goes above and beyond with follow-up support

David is awesome. He is very approachable, laid back, and patient. I needed help with a specific project. Not only was he able to jump in and quickly understand the study design, he helped me better understand the tests that I was running and suggested some additional tests that ended up making more sense. He was also very patient and thorough in answering post-session follow-up questions. I will definitely consult with him again!

Worth every penny and every second of time!

My meeting with David was great. He walked me through a ton of SPSS output reports and other pertinent stats-related data. I was able to move ahead with my dissertation based on his help. It was an invaluable session. I highly recommend David for anyone needing (simple and/or advanced) help with statistics.

I was stuck

David understands the task and challenge and is helping me get unstuck and move forward, so I can gain precision with monte carlo simulation. I appreciate the help and his willingness to figure things out with me.

Patient and clearly communicated the tougher concepts!

David was very helpful at explaining tougher concepts. He was also detail oriented and was able to quickly identify syntax errors in my STATA code, as well.

Incredible

David was incredible. I was trying to create a very specific curve for a project that multiple people had tried to help me with but couldn’t figure out. David figured it out in 10 minutes. He also simplified it so it was very easy to understand. He is an incredible teacher and I will absolutely be using him again.

Patient and kind!

David simplified statistics and research methods in a way that my right-brain thinking mind could digest. He was kind and patient as he walked me through two hours worth of sessions.

Very Knowledgeable

David knew right away if my project was heading in the right direction and sensed if I understood the material. Would definitely recommend. He understands statistics front and back as well as economic concepts with respect to econometrics.

Thoroughly knowledgeable and patient tutor

David helped me to review and prepare for the final exam in a required graduate-level research methods class. I don’t have any previous formal statistics education, but he explained complicated concepts with no pretension, made them comprehensible, and offered expert perspective while keeping it relatable for a novice. I’m definitely more comfortable heading into the final.
