About Dr. Liz

Hello Art History Students,

I am an experienced Art History professional (B.A. from Bryn Mawr College; M.A. from University of Pennsylvania; M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. from Yale University) in the Denver-Boulder-Louisville-Lafayette-Longmont area eager to share my knowledge of Western and/or Non-Western Art History (Asian Art).

I discovered Art History as a senior in high school thanks to a great teacher, excellent classroom experiences, and visits to nearby museums where we discussed the characteristics of different periods of Art History while observing objects and discussing their features.

I combined my passion for art history and my experiences in museum visits in the courses I taught on the college level: Intro to Art History I, Intro to Art History II, Art Appreciation, and Modern Architecture, as well a variety of Asian and NonWestern Art History classes such as Intro to Oriental Art, Asian Art History, Chinese Art History, Japanese Art History, and The Art of East Asia to name a few. My training at Yale especially served me well in teaching positions at Yale, Southern Connecticut State University, University of Connecticut and other East Coast colleges. Since moving to CO in 2002 I continued teaching at University of Colorado, Boulder and University of Denver. In addition to my unique expertise in both Western and Asian Art History, my teaching experience served me well as I evaluated Advanced Placement Art History Exams (essay questions) for 5 years. While I enjoyed lecturing to large classes and smaller seminars, I am eager to work one on one with young art historians on everything from the basics - studying art in its cultural, historical, social, and artistic context - to perfecting study skills, enhancing test preparation and performance, and sharing methods for success and standards of excellence.

Please let me know if you would like additional information about my knowledge, skills, and experience. I look forward to individual and small group coaching on the History of Art.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

As an Advanced Placement Art History student I discovered a love of art, both in the classroom and in the galleries of the Cleveland Museum of Art. I attained my B.A. from Bryn Mawr College, majoring in Western Art HIstory while I created my own special focus on Asian Art. I received my M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania before going on to achieve a Master's of Arts in Art History, a Master's of Philosophy, and my Ph.D. in Art History, with special expertise in Asian Art. Since 1995, I taught a variety of Western and NonWestern/Asian Art History courses on the college level, including History of Art I; History of Art II; Art Appreciation; Modern Architecture; Intro of Asian Art; Chinese Art; Japanese Art and others at Yale, University of So. Connecticut, U of Connecticut; and since 2002 I taught at both University of Colorado, Boulder and University of Denver. In addition to my knowledge of both Western and non-Western Art History, I served as an Advanced Placement Art History test evaluator for five years. My own studies, travels, classroom experiences, and passions enhance my skills and expertise in Art History - East and West.
