I am a recent graduate from the University of Colorado at Boulder. I currently hold a Bachelor's of Arts degree, my major is English. I also attended the School of Education at University of Colorado at Boulder, and hold a valid teachers license. I enjoy working with students who need extra help and attention for their reading and writing skills. I am dedicated to my work and helping others succeed.
My approach to tutoring is simple. Find out what your child's interests are in order to help them learn. For example, if your child, "John" a 7th grade boy hates to write, it is my job to figure out what he is interested in. John has a very deep interest in cars, he likes to work on them for fun. In order to get John to write I would ask him to write an explanation of how to fix his favorite car (explanatory writing). Let's say we were working on descriptive writing I would ask him to describe his favorite car. From there we would use those sample writings to edit and revise. We would work on spelling, grammar and fluency. Also, it is important to listen to your students so that you can develop a safe community were they can learn and succeed. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
