About Rachel

Hello all!

My name is Rae (short for Rachel), and I am a language/writing tutor, specialized in English/ELL/ESL, but also with eight years experience of Italian, Spanish, and French tutoring in private and in group settings.

ENGLISH/ELL/ESL/GRAMMAR: My most recently acquired specialty is teaching English, ELL/ESL (English Language Learning or English as a Second Language). I have a TEFL 140 hours certificate, which means that I attended and graduated from a program specifically designed to teach English to non-English speakers using creative and innovative methods. I began to work as an English tutor at university, where many of my students were attending college and needed help to understand their courses, as English was not their first language. Then, in France and in Spain, I continued teaching English privately, using various methods (conversation, films, interactive exercises, listening, reading), for various reasons (business English, travel English, academic history, and fun), and for various levels (I've taught both high levels and both children and adults with very basic levels of English).

LANGUAGES: I am a native speaker of English and Italian, two languages I also studied at university order to know them on a more academic level. I also received excellent grades in French all throughout college, additionally working at several French-speaking companies, and living in France (in Paris and in the South of France) for several years. In French, I have taken the EU language level assessment test which has shown my level to be at C2 (the highest possible level)!
As for Spanish, I learned it through a diverse group of situations: I studied the language in high school and at university, but I also learned it by speaking to Spanish-speaking friends in Colorado and San Francisco, and later during the two months I lived in Mexico, and for the two years I lived in Spain.

WRITING/PROOFREADING/READING/LITERATURE: As I specify in my qualifications, one of my great passions is reading and writing. This is why I chose to study journalism, and I often write in my spare time. Additionally, with two degrees, I have a lot of experience researching, writing, and editing, academic papers in various subjects. Because I love writing and reading so much, proofreading is something that I have always been good at, where I can apply my strong knowledge of grammar and my understanding of writing style to the text that you need to create.

WHERE AND WHAT DID I STUDY? I am a graduate of Blanquerna University in Barcelona, where I obtained my Masters in Journalism, and prior, of MSUD (Metropolitan State University of Denver, previously Metropolitan State College of Denver), where I received a Bachelors in languages.

WHAT IS MY EXPERIENCE? While in college, I was a tutor at MSUD through the campus Tutoring Center. There, I tutored diverse population, ranging from ELL students, to 18 year old freshmen, to older students returning to school after many years. The people I taught also had a base knowledge ranging from a level comparable to mine (who wanted to study literature and analyze historical texts) to absolute beginners, with whom I began to teach the very building blocks of the language, such as the alphabet, etc.
Most recently, I was an English language instructor at a British English Academy in Barcelona, where I learned more about teaching techniques and various problems that Spanish speakers face when learning English.
Immediately after I graduated from MSUD I began building my private student base, and I have maintained it ever since, teaching English, Italian, Spanish, French, grammar in all languages, history in English, and English conversation. Part of the reason why I like teaching so much is finding new ways to communicate concepts. Over the years, as a student, I've learned the ways for me to understand material the best. I realize that study techniques aren't the same for each student, and I've found it to be a really fun challenge to help tutees of all ages find out how they learn best, and then develop lessons that adhere with that!

I look forward to hearing from you,

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English is my native tongue, and I have polished my understanding of the language not only through reading and literature, which I have been avidly consuming my whole life, but also as a writer (I have a Masters in journalism), linguistics (I was the president of the Linguistics Club at MSUD, where I got my Bachelor's degree), learning other languages (I speak Italian, French, Spanish and Catalan) and especially, as an ESL teacher. I have been teaching English in private and group lessons for about eight years, most recently at a British English academy in Barcelona, the Callan School of English.

I have a 140 TEFL certificate, which qualifies me to teach English as a second language (or to ELL, English Language Learners). I completed the course and got my certificate in 2014, in France, and while I had already been teaching English to ELL students in the United States and in France before that, this allowed me to become an English instructor in Spain. in Barcelona, I worked as an English instructor for Spanish and Catalan speakers at the Callan School of English, where some of my students were also French, Italian, Brazilian, and Japanese. I have been designing my lessons myself to better help with students' pronunciation, speaking skills, and memory regarding English grammar.

I have spent the last ten years refining my knowledge of the French language! I have a strong grammatical as well as a linguistic understanding of French, I can coach students on pronunciation, and have studied many different aspects of French cinema, literature, history, art, and music. I am passionate about the language, and therefore love continuing to study it and teaching it!
Additionally, as with Italian, I have eight or so years experience as a tutor, both in a one-on-one setting and in a group environment. I have worked with varied populations, ranging from children to adults, and have experienced many different approaches to teaching the material.

I am, as they say, a lover of grammar! Not only have I studied English linguistics (I was president of the Linguistics Club at the university that I attended in the United States, MSUD), but I have also been an English language teacher for about eight years. I am a writer and I enjoy proofreading, and this has given me an insight into grammar. Additionally, I have learned a lot about grammar in foreign romance languages (Italian, French, and Spanish) and I have a strong handle on their grammatical rules. This often carries over to English, and it has given me a very in-depth understanding of what English grammar is and how to use it. It doesn't have to be boring...I can make it fun!

I was born in Italy (in a town by Genoa) and was raised in Florence, where I lived until the age of fourteen. I then pursued a minor in Italian at MSUD. I am bilingual in English and Italian, meaning that they are both my native tongues: speaking Italian is an integral, if not essential, part of who I am. I love speaking the language, and I know it very well. I have an innate knowledge of what is right or wrong, and am familiar with idioms, cultural particularities, cinema, music, film, and history. I would love to share what I know with you!
Additionally, as with French, I have eight or so years experience as a tutor, both in a one-on-one setting and in a group environment. I have worked with varied populations, ranging from children to adults, and have experienced many different approaches to teaching the material.

Literature is one of my great loves. I always secretly wanted to study English literature at university, and I still, not-so-secretly, want to be a writer. I am constantly reading one, if not two, books at a time, and I think everyone should have a good foundation of the classics of literature. One of my favorite things about literature is, in fact, the ability to truly appreciate a good work of literature that is older and more dated. Good writing and good books transcend time, and I can help you or your child really understand and really appreciate literature - not only that, but to have fun reading it!

As I explained in my Grammar subject section, I am a writer and an experienced proofreader. I have proofreading experience as a teacher, as a colleague/tutor at university, and as a professional journalist. I have an eye for detail and can give you the correct way to write any piece of text you wish, including tips that you will remember about style, grammar, vocabulary, even pacing. Second to writing, I enjoy proofreading most - to me, it's like a delicate mathematical equation, where there are several correct ways to put something down on paper. I can help you find those ways, and through my lessons/services, you will also learn to become a better proofreader yourself!

Along the same lines as literature, reading has always been a passion of mine. I will help you to find the appropriate reading material to really engage you, whatever level you may be, or perhaps I can help you to better understand a work of literature! I think that reading is a skill that, more and more, is fading with the introduction of the internet. I can help you learn how to enjoy reading all over again.

I started learning Spanish in high school, continued m=y studies at University, and then practiced what I had learned by speaking to Spanish speakers from all over the world in Colorado: I practiced with people from Venezuela, from Colombia, from Argentina, from Spain, and from Mexico. In fact, I learned even more Spanish when I went to live in Quintanaroo, in southern Mexico, for a couple months. After that, I lived for two years in Barcelona, one of Spain's largest cities. What's more, Spanish and Italian, my native language, are extremely similar, so my accent (I've been told) is really authentic - the thing that gives me away is that I have consciously chosen to speak a more global Spanish, so what clues people in to the fact that I don't come from a Spanish-speaking country is that they can't peg where I'm from. For our lessons, I can help with Spanish pronunciation, grammar, culture, and more, from all Spanish-speaking countries.

In my eight years teaching ESL/ESOL/ELL, I have had many students preparing for a variety of exams, most notably the TOEFL exam. I can help you in all the aspects of the exam: reading, writing, listening, and I can also help you with your test-taking abilities. Let's study together!!!

I have an extremely wide vocabulary for two reasons: one, because I've been a voracious reader ever since I was a child, and two, because I draw a large amount of Latin-based words from other languages I speak, such as Italian, Spanish, French, and Catalan. I also have always loved linguistics, and have a strong interest in etymology (the history and origin of words). I can help you improve your vocabulary with fun tricks, games, and exercises to keep you involved!!!

One of my favorite things to do in the world is write! Ever since I was a child, I always wanted to be a writer (this is why I have a Masters in Journalism). Throughout the years, I have taken many writing courses, in high school and university, of varying degrees. I can help you write an academic paper (research, persuasive, or anything of the sort). I can help you write an article for journalism, I can help you with creative writing, and I can also help you by proofreading your work and help you become a better proofreader yourself. I would love it if everyone appreciated how good writing can make you feel, and I think over the years I have gotten really good at communicating why it's such a good practice!

Knowledgeable and Friendly! — Rachel is a wonderful French tutor! I wanted to brush up on my French before a trip to Paris, and she was a real help. She was engaging and patient during our lessons. Her extensive knowledge of French grammar and vocabulary, as well as her appreciation of French culture and literature is evident.
