My name is Patrick, I am a recent UNC grad with my degree in mathematics and secondary education. I've had about five years of formal tutoring/teaching experience, but I've been a patient leader and passionate about learning my entire life. I would like to end up teaching middle school, but I have tutored students from fifth grade to my fellow math majors. I think that regardless of the level, math can be frustrating, but I have found success leading others on that path of discovery.
My tutoring approach will be to assess what your individual needs are as a student. Some students will be preparing for a specific test, some students will be cramming for finals (I hope not!) and some students realize that a consistent and deliberate approach to mathematics will meet the most success. Regardless of how you would like help, I am here to make that journey easier. I aim to steer students away from common misconceptions, help set up a problem in such a way that the solution can be discovered, and discuss what methods of mathematics and what methods of study will lead to success.
I hope that your math needs line up with what I am capable of providing, because I always look forward to my next opportunity to open up some math doors for students. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
4 years experience tutoring Algebra, from advanced middle school algebra students to high school Algebra I to College Algebra. Complete familiarity with the concepts and several tactics to understand them.
After tutoring several algebra classes, from middle school accelerated algebra classes to high school Algebra I and Algebra II, to college algebra and Abstract Algebra I & II, I have a well developed familiarity with the concepts that are important and the knowledge that must be developed by students mastering Algebra II.
As a student in my own discrete math class, I mastered combinatorics, probabilities, and modeling appropriate for the course. I have since tutored several students in this same content, but have also seen these concepts pop up in probabilities courses, liberal arts math courses, linear algebra courses, and even abstract algebra courses. Seeing the interconnectedness of these ideas and approaches helps me to guide and present this material in a way that is not only graspable, but relevant to whatever a student's ultimate goals are.
