In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Civics and government are two subjects in which I am "highly qualified" on my Indiana teaching license.
In addition to giving public presentations for a third-party study abroad provider prior to my career as a teacher, I was also an award-winning member of the Hammond High School Speech and Debate team in the mid-90s.
The study of World Religions formed part of my training for teaching social studies, and I taught a unit on the "Big 5" major religions each year of my teaching career.
As a licensed social studies teacher, I am qualified to teach in a variety of subject areas, all of which include extensive reading and writing. In addition, I spent the past year guest teaching on a long-term basis in a middle school reading room and in a middle school math class. I have experience tutoring ELL and behaviorally-challenged students.
