About Nathan

I love tutoring and my approach is three-fold. First, I teach the tutee how to learn and not need help. Second, I expect the tutee to complete their assignments as much as possible before each session so we can identify and focus on specific trouble spots. Third, I work within the framework and scope of their primary mathematics teacher to supplement and augment what is happening in the classroom.

I have experience as a nationally certified tutor, tutoring in high school and college, as well as volunteer tutoring of the GED math tests. I have also taught middle and high school mathematics and instructed college mathematics. I enjoy working with teenagers and adults of all ages.

I also teach university math remediation classes (AKA developmental education) as well as classes to bypass remediation by preparing for the Accuplacer/Compass admission tests.

I am familiar and comfortable with current technology (graphing calculators, computer algebra systems, computers, mathematics programming) as well distance learning (online homework and testing and MyMathLab, WebAssign, Khan Academy, Skype, etc.).

In addition to tutoring online I enjoy working in person with each student. Meeting at local public libraries is ideal as some branches have reservable private and safe study rooms with white boards.

For each appointment the tutee needs to bring all their materials, text book, class notes, completed homework (as much as possible), specific questions for me, and any completed instructions from our previous session. If online homework is used in class then please bring a laptop. If you don't have one, there are often Chromebooks available for checkout at the library.

Additionally, I can supplement or subsitute regular homework with specific and tailored lesson plans. Prepartion time might be billed seperate.

Shortly after each session, I will report our progress and my obervations, including instructions for follow up.

I strongly recommend use of the WyzAnt app for easier communication and calendering purposes.

I enjoy helping each tutee recognize that they are, in fact, capable of learning and succeeding in mathematics. I look forward to the opportunity to serve.

I do not tutor CMU/WCCC students in class levels that I at the time teach as I am employed as math faculty. I will, however, tutor CMU/WCCC students taking other class levels.
Thank you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught and tutored Algebra I in middle and high school, as well as tutored and taught math beginning in 2003.

Algebra 2

I have taught and tutored Algebra II in high school and college, as well as tutored and taught math beginning in 2003.

Linear Algebra

I have two semesters of linear algebra as an undergraduate at Mesa State College (now Colorado Mesa University) and some linear algebra study in graduate school (University of Colorado - Denver). Additionally, I have completed several semesters of independent study which relied heavily on linear algebra. I enjoy that particular subject very much.

Prealgebra

I have taught and tutored Pre-Algebra in middle and high school, as well as tutored and taught math beginning in 2003.

Precalculus

I have been tutoring and/or teaching math since 2003.

He really knows his stuff!

Thank You Nathan! What a great teacher! He made the impossible seem possible and the math seem comprehensible. He takes the time to make sure you understand the work. He works with what you do know and builds on that foundation! For someone who hates to ask for help, it was a very positive experience.
