Because I love the way words bump up together making rhythm and rhyme and music; because I believe everyone should have the joy and sense of adventure that comes from opening the pages of a book and being able to read the words; I love to teach and tutor for literacy. My lessons are custom made and innovative, geared to the individual needs, learning language and interests of the student. With nine years classroom experience teaching Core Knowledge Music in public charter schools, half a century of experience as an avid reader, and a few decades as a private piano teacher, I will work to find the most effective connection between your child’s dreams and interests, and literature, writing, history or music.
I am highly qualified in elementary education and have a current Colorado Substitute teacher's license. I have earned graduate credit hours in:
- Great Books and shared inquiry in the classroom
- Quantum learning for teachers
- Teaching that reaches ADD/ADHD students
These graduate credits, along with my undergraduate degree in Organizational Management (emphasis: leadership) have helped me achieve success with middle-grade literature classes as well as tutoring my first grade grandson. My classroom and public school teaching experience has spanned ages 5 through 14. Through private piano lessons, I have had the privilege to work with students 4 through 84 to meet musical goals. I love to watch children learn and grow, and to be a part of that moment when the light comes on in their eyes. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
With a 40 year history of teaching private piano students, and nine years experience in public charter schools; during which time I organized and conducted beginning piano and keyboard classes both as an enrichment class and after-school hours; I am writing to request Wyzant certification in the area of piano. I began taking piano lessons at the age of four; was apprenticed by my piano teacher to teach her overflow students at the age of 16; and continued my piano education through Mesa State College under the individual instruction of Dr. Elizabeth Moroso. Mesa State College transcripts indicate that I passed Class A Piano Proficiency in May of 1985, the same year I completed MUS 216- Keyboard Harmony.
With regard to piano accompaniment, I have played for School District 51 students at solo ensemble contest; accompanied Conifer High School vocal music students in concert and for auditions; rehearsed soloists for weddings and auditions; provided chapel organ and piano accompaniment at U.S. Army Chapel, Karlsruhe, Germany; and numerous praise and worship services in Colorado and Texas.
My aim in teaching piano is to help students achieve musical dreams and goals. Emphasis is on enrichment and fluency at the keyboard and lessons are tailored to the goals and musical genre dreams of each individual student. Study books / curriculum are chosen to support goals and individual needs. In addition, I can coach, tutor, or provide practice assistance using any method books assigned by the current teacher. I am experienced in reading (and teaching) charts, chords, notes and accompaniment.
