About John

I have worked largely in community education settings. I have a passion for the history, and the literature describing history, in the words of those who lived events. I enjoy proving to people that history and literature can be exciting, and events centuries removed can come alive even today. Through reading and first hand accounts, history becomes much more exciting, personal, and dynamic.

My main points of focus lately are the history of the American West, both social and ecologic. I also have a deep seated interest in medieval and classical history. My course study at the University of Montana largely aimed towards a future advanced degree in medieval history and literature. I have read the foundational accounts of Ancient Rome in the original Latin, and find interesting parallels throughout that time frame, as compared to our current society.

I have been actively involved in learning the ecology of the American West for over twenty years. Most of this is direct field observation, which I find to be the most engaging manner to teach of the principles. I have studied forest management, range management, and wildlife management formally, while educating myself along the way to fill in more detail.

I graduated with a degree in English Literature from the University of Montana. I am deeply interested in many facets of English Literature, and had outstanding relationships with my professors to drive my passion in this area of study. I was provided a smorgasbord of different genres, critiques, and ideas regarding literature, and there is nothing more I enjoy than sharing my passion with others.

My history lessons came early. Growing up in Western Montana, the history of the West surrounded me. This led me to study history in all its forms immensely in college. I partook in graduate level classes as an undergrad surrounding the philosophy of history. As with Literature, I developed relationships with my professors I still hold to this day. I was able to learn from them how to be passionate about history, without being boring. I studied the classics in the Classics Department at University of Montana, as I stated above, in the original Latin, and in Greek translated by my professors. I became an anomaly in the English Department, as the history, and classics inform every bit of critical thought and writing in literature. I constantly had to continue digging for connections, which provided a broad base of knowledge on numerous subjects, American History and Classics being just two examples.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to have a passionate, knowledgeable, and interesting discussion regarding any of these subjects. Any tutoring I do will be holistic. You will get to learn about history, literature, and science in the context of study. I strive to be dynamic. I don't want to teach, I want you to learn, and become passionate about your own studies. I was given this opportunity, and I would love to pass it forward!

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
