About Sean

With experience tutoring all age groups and learning styles, I can help students become more comfortable and prepared for Mathematics classes at the middle school to undergraduate levels. I also prepare students for ACT or GRE testing, covering topics and test-taking skills.

I like to help take the stress out of these testing experiences. I've been helping people to understand Math since starting to learn the subject myself. What started as a friendly tip to my classmate led to regular open tutoring sessions on Saturdays through my middle school career. Having taught music lessons for just as long, I know that Math is more that a left brain activity and it can be accessed through many different avenues.

My teaching style is very laid back. I'm not trying to beat these ideas into anyone. Rather, I prefer to guide the student through the thought processes that I find most helpful. It is a matter of building confidence and creative problem solving skills. I'm not here to give you the answers; I'm here to help you find the answer yourself. Math is fun, and I like helping others see how fun it can be.

As a Mathematics major, I completed college level courses in: Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Differential Equations, Topology, Modern Geometry, and Abstract Algebra. My ACT score was a 35 total with a 35 on the Math Section.

I have been playing French Horn for 15 years and have had a personal coach for 13 of those years. In High School, I was consistently first chair of the League Honor Bands and was invited to Play with the State Honor Band my Senior year. In College, I studied music theory, history, and the French Horn in specific. I was involved with the Wind Ensemble and various other chamber groups throughout my stay at Willamette University, and competed from time to time at local contests throughout the region. My experience with tutoring other subjects as well make me well suited to help people learn the French Horn.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. I'd be happy to meet before any official sessions. My favorite place to tutor is at the public library.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

The first time I took the ACT, I got a 34 on the Math section. The second time I got a 35. Given the overall score of 35 and the consistently high Math grades, I have been able to successfully help many students improve their ACT scores for 6 years.

Algebra 2

I'm well versed in the art of math fu. in addition to studying mathematics in my undergrad, I was the valedictorian of my high school. Algebra two is also one of my most frequently taught subject.

Calculus

I got my bachelor's in mathematics and computer science.

French Horn

I have been playing French Horn for 15 years and have had a personal coach for 13 of those years. In High School, I was consistently first chair of the League Honor Bands and was invited to Play with the State Honor Band my Senior year. Java

I minored in computer science in undergrad and majored in mathematics. I've been tutoring Java since I learned it.

Precalculus

I've taken precalculus, calculus, and various upper level calculus courses. I received a 5 on the AP calculus test.

Very knowledgeable and patient!

I tried several tutors in addition to Sean, and Sean was the only one who did not require me to "prep" them before our sessions. He showed up, always on time, extremely prepared, with no prior knowledge of what we were going to be doing, and yet still managed to quickly navigate through my math problems, explaining in terms I could understand. I highly recommend Sean F. for tutoring!
