All my life, I've harbored a deep passion for education. Not just lectures and memorization, but engaging students with material. I believe that a committed teacher or tutor can make students want to learn; he or she can make them truly excited about education.
While I'm new to online marketplaces such as these, my background in education and tutoring runs deep.
Most recently, I've worked as a Migrant Education Advocate for Greeley Evans District 6. In this position, I served as a liaison, counselor, adviser, and tutor for migrant and refugee students and families from around the world. The demographics of Greeley pose a unique challenge for education; district-wide, students come from over 61 countries and speak more than 61 languages and dialects. My goals in the position centered around helping students graduate, learn to advocate for themselves, and feel part of a broader Greeley community. I helped students engage with and comprehend material at all grade levels and in subjects as diverse as government, algebra, and chemistry. As an Advocate, I increased migrant student participation five-fold, planned and hosted a “Culture Fest” event at Central High School, and built trust and camaraderie among my students. I learned that education goes far beyond the classroom, and that students must be engaged with both the material and the environment around them in order to effectively learn and grow as humans.
As a graduate student at Colorado State University, I worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for courses on cultural anthropology. There, I learned how to work with large class sizes, persuasively lecture and engage students with unfamiliar material. As an undergraduate, I served as Assistant Debate Coach at Blue Valley Northwest High School in Overland Park, KS, as Peer Tutor for Calculus I, and as a Peer Educator for the Capitalism on Film Learning Community. In all of these endeavors, I honed my abilities to communicate with students and cultivated my passion for education.
Please don't hesitate to contact me! I will happily work around your schedule to make this work. I'm excited to get to know you, and show you what tutoring and education can be. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
