About Ben

My passion for teaching stems from a desire to get people excited about science and animals. At Colorado State University I currently work as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Department of Biology. I have taught multiple laboratory sections in general Animal Biology, and am currently a TA for Ornithology. I look forward to expanding my teaching repertoire both in my studies at CSU and as a tutor for students with which I can work one on one. I believe that the fewer students I have in a class, the more attention I can provide for them to excel and teach in a way that best facilitates understanding.

My specialty of teaching is without a doubt within the realm of animal biology. Between graduating from Cornell University with a B.S. in Animal Sciences, Magna cum Laude with Distinction in Research, and from University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine as a V.M.D., I am proficient in most animal topics, particularly biology, anatomy, zoology, and health, and am familiar with the hard work and dedication required to excel in these fields. That said, I am nothing without my geeky math side. As a Ph.D. student, I am currently using mathematical modeling that requires a fair bit of calculus know-how. I am comfortable with my mathematical skills, and enjoy helping others recognize the power and fun in manipulating numbers.

I am a hard worker and am very familiar with many different forms of testing. I would like to build a good rapport with my students; as such, I will provide regular feedback and would ask for the same, that we might all grow and develop our skills together.

My hours are flexible to coincide with our respective schedules as much as possible. I have a 24 hour cancellation policy, but will offer make-up sessions in the case of last-minute problems.

I would be happy to meet with students in person when possible, but am also available through Skype to offer tutoring services outside of the Fort Collins, CO region.

My current work involves statistical modeling, and as such I have a strong basis in math, including geometry, trigonometry, and calculus.

My entire career has been dedicated to animal science, starting as an Animal Science major in undergraduate school, then working through veterinary school to become a doctor of veterinary medicine, and now in a disease-related ecological context. As such, I am well versed in most aspects of the animal kingdom, particularly in animal biology, anatomy, zoology, and veterinary medicine. I also have training in microbiology and parasitology, among other health-related disciplines.

To date, I have taken the GREs twice; once to enter veterinary school, and again over five years later in 2013 to apply for graduate school. Each time I've taken the GRE, I received scores in all categories greater than the 90th percentile, with particularly good scores (near perfect) in the math sections.

I greatly look forward to hearing from you, and I hope that by working together, I can help you achieve your dreams!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Zoology

As an Animal Sciences undergraduate major and doctor of veterinary medicine (VMD), I have a great wealth of knowledge in the field of zoology. I have taught laboratory sections in animal biology covering all phyla of the animal kingdom, and will be teaching Ornithology this spring. As my life and passion, this is likely my most qualified area of expertise. I am most comfortable with mammals, but well experienced working with birds, reptiles, and amphibians, as well. My invertebrate zoology knowledge was recently refreshed by teaching the Animal Biology lab, which focused on invertebrates through most of the course. If further qualifications, credentials, or recommendations are required, please let me know and I will be happy to supply.
