About Andrew

My name is Andrew. I am a father of an eight year old son and a twelve year old daughter. I taught both general education and special education at the elementary level for ten years in and around Athens, Georgia before relocating to Fort Collins in December of 2015. Presently, I hold a Colorado teaching license for Special Education Generalist. Besides tutoring, I plan to be a substitute teacher in the Poudre School District to learn more about the local schools and prepare for the Spring hiring season for teachers.

Throughout my ten years teaching I gained a strong reputation among my peers, administrators and parents for connecting well with a wide diversity of students and helping children be both more successful and happier at school. I have taught a wide range of students at the elementary level, from gifted students that were in need of a more challenging curriculum to students with emotional disorders, learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and/or other factors that required interventions and differentiation for them to be more effective learners and participants in their school environment. As a general education teacher, a special education teacher and a parent of two young kids, I believe that listening closely to students' and parents' concerns is crucial to be effective as an educator.

I have spent hundreds of hours assisting a wide range of students become more successful with their writing skills. I enjoy writing and consider it both an art form and an invaluable tool for effectively communicating one's thoughts. I have written numerous creative writing pieces and informational reports. One of my greatest educational experiences was taking a screen writing course in high school taught by the author, Pat Conroy.

As a public school teacher for ten years, I have planned and taught countless lessons based on Common Core standards. I believe strongly that students should be effective problem solvers, communicators, and team players so they can be successful in whatever pursuits they choose to follow as adults.

I taught special education for six years in both resource (pull-out) settings and co-taught/ general education classrooms. Children I taught and wrote IEP's for were identified as having ADD/ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, emotional behavioral disorders, learning disorders of varying types, and speech and language disorders. General education teachers I worked with often called on me to assist them with students who were not identified as requiring special education services, yet had difficulty being successful in certain academic areas.

Please contact me to set up an appointment so we can meet and determine how I can help you or your child be more successful and happier in school.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
