About John

I spent 10 years working for the IRS in San Francisco. The positions I held were: Revenue Agent, Appellate Conferee and Designated Expert Witness for tax litigation handled by the U.S. Attorney. I taught certain tax courses presented by the IRS for the benefit of the employees. This experience increased my interest in teaching and tutoring which prompted me to teach evening courses in Basic Income Tax and Principles of Accounting at the College of San Mateo.

Subsequent to my employment with the IRS, I worked for a large bank in Glendale, California. I was responsible for negotiating with investors for the sale of large assets, known as syndication, which were tax-motivated by both the bank and the investor. This was a constant negotiating process that required explaining the bank's position in a reasonable and direct way so that the investor's representative would consider our position.

Throughout my educational years, math was the subject I enjoyed the most. Specifically, I found algebra to be the most interesting subject I encountered. While teaching at the College of San Mateo, I did a limited amount of tutoring with Algebra students.

My extensive experience during my professional years provided me with the opportunity to apply my knowledge acquired in an educational setting to real-life situations. I look forward to working with students on a one-on-one basis and assisting them in overcoming the problem areas that they encounter in the course of their studies.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Tax Preparation

I worked for the IRS for 10 years, and also have an MBA (Taxation) degree from Golden Gate University.
While working for the IRS, I attended 7 courses covering a variety of tax topics. These courses lasted 1 week to 3 months.
