About Charlie

Hello! My name is Charlie, and I'm currently completing my final year of school at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Aside from school, playing and recording music has always been my main focus and passion in life. I currently play in 6 bands in Fort Collins, and over the last 8 years have played in over 18 bands. My main instruments of focus are drums, acoustic and electric guitar, and bass guitar. Over the last 17 years, I have been trained in each of these instruments, self-recorded and released over 10 albums, performed over 100 times, and completed 1 national tour.

I will provide tutoring that will be tailored specifically to what the student wishes to learn, while also covering essential elements of music such as timing, scales, discipline, and professionalism that spread across all instruments. I have 17 years of knowledge in music performance, composition, songwriting, and recording, and I’d love the opportunity to share my experiences and knowledge with those eager to learn!

If you are interested in tutoring, I’d love to meet you in person for free to further answer anymore questions you may have about my experience to make sure we are a good fit. Hope to hear from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have been writing and recording music since age 12, and have continued to write and record music for the last 9 years. Creating original compositions is a specialty of mine, as I am currently a member of 6 bands all of which write, perform, and record original compositions. Through completing music theory classes in high school and through the University of Northern Colorado, I have a firm understanding of how melodies, harmonies, and rhythm sections interact to create full compositions.

Drums

At age 10 I received my first drum kit, after joining the elementary school band. I then took a series of drum lessons with Dog House Music in Lafayette, Colorado. After gaining a basic understanding of tempo, rhythm, and the coordination required to drum, I continued to teach myself drum maintenance, performance, composition, recording, and etiquette. I have played drums on over 5 albums that have been released worldwide.

Music Production

At age 12 I began recording my original music with an 8 track GNX4 guitar workstation pedal. I quickly became infatuated with audio engineering and music production. At age 16 I purchased Logic Pro 8, and through a series of online sessions I taught myself how to professionally track, edit, mix, and master multitrack audio recordings. I have personally released over 5 albums globally, as well as spent a significant amount of time in recording studios in Northern Colorado. I was mentored by audio engineer Bill Stevenson, who records bands such as Rise Against, NOFX, and Broadway Calls, at The Blasting Room in Fort Collins. I also recorded one album with Brad Smalling, owner and audio engineer for Evergroove Studios and Mountain Size Records in Evergreen Colorado. Brad and I maintain a close relationship in which he has mentored my audio engineering ventures. Samples of my records can be found on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, and a variety of other digital outlets.

Songwriting

I have been writing and recording my own original songs since age 12, and have continued to write and record them for the last 9 years. Writing songs is a specialty of mine, as I am currently a member of 6 bands all of which write, perform, and record original songs. Through completing music theory classes in high school and through the University of Northern Colorado, I have a firm understanding of how melodies, harmonies, and rhythm sections interact to create full compositions. Additionally, with knowledge of every instrument common in a band, (drums, guitar, bass, vocals), I have a firm understanding of how these elements mix to create great songs. My knowledge of songwriting is geared towards alternative/indie-rock/singer-songwriter genres.
