About Brenda

An experienced and well-versed educator, I have taught in Arizona, as well as in many of the world's finest international schools (Paris, Singapore, New York, etc). I have a BA in Journalism, a current teaching certification in Secondary Education, a middle school endorsement, and my M.Ed in Gifted Education. My travels from far and wide have allowed me to work with a diverse group of students, and I have come across a gamut of learners. My strengths include hands-on math instruction as well as writing composition and literature. My background in gifted education lends itself to working with highly gifted students who either seek a challenge, or need one-on-one guidance for task completion. Having said that, this experience also lends itself to students who struggle, given that seeking a student's learning style is key! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am an AZ certified teacher. I have taught for more than 15 years. I am a gifted specialist, and have taught gifted math to grades 3-6. I use hands-on teaching methodology such as real world measurement in both metric and imperial/US systems with weight, volume, and length with labs utilizing the measurement tools, not just pencil and paper work.

Study Skills

I have taught for more than 15 years, and have worked as a tutor for students needing extra assistance with school work. The one-on-one tutelage I provide begins with identifying the area in which a child has both strengths and weaknesses, both with content and study skills. Using the child's strengths ( auditory, written, kinesthetic, etc) I develop a plan to help that student achieve success in his/her approach to academics, a fundamental aspect of study skills.
