I love learning and have followed my interests into many different areas. With my master's degrees in History from University of St. Andrews (Scotland), MBA from University of Edinburgh (Scotland) and Masters in Education (specializing in ESOL), I feel qualified and equipped to tutor in a range of subject areas. After living for the past three years in Latin America I also feel qualified to help students with Spanish. Maybe your needs are in the areas of business studies, world history or ESL? Sometimes a student just needs help with studying and organizing their school life in general. I believe I can help.
When working with students I always remember that not everyone learns the same way or at the same pace. It's important for me to work out how to make the topic relevant, interesting and manageable for each student - we always learn more when we're interested. Maybe we'll use mind maps, whiteboards, make flashcards or come up with rhymes and memory techniques to make the learning just right for the student. There is no "one size fits all" approach in teaching.
More, effective studying isn't just about memorizing a bunch of facts. It's important to learn how to research, analyze, organize your arguments and then get it all down on paper. After many years of studying I feel I can help students organize their time, priorities and thoughts, with the result being effective study techniques and accomplished assignments or projects. With the right energy, approach and study skills students can be successful in all sorts of subject areas. I love learning and have followed my interests into many different areas. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
With a MBA from a leading university I feel qualified to teach a range of business subjects. In addition to my academic qualifications I have owned and sold two successful businesses, employed hundreds of people and become experienced in operations management, strategic management, personnel management and negotiations. Put simply I believe I have the academic qualifications and the experience to back them up. With a M.Ed. I feel qualified and prepared to teach in this subject area.
I am both qualified and experienced in teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL). While studying towards my Masters in Education my concentration was ESOL. My coursework included: linguistics, language acquisition, assessing language learners, and strategies and materials for teaching English-Learners. Also, I taught English in Costa Rica to high school students in a private school and adults in a business setting. I believe my education, experience and interest in language acquisition, which comes from learning a second language (Spanish), makes me a well-rounded ESL/ESOL tutor.
For the past three years, until September 2013, I lived and taught English in Costa Rica. By attending language schools there and in Nicaragua, and then immersing myself in the local community, I constantly worked on my Spanish language proficiency. Now I enjoy speaking Spanish with my bilingual children and volunteering in my local dual language elementary school. Although I might not have learned Spanish in the typical textbook fashion, I believe I acquired the language in a more natural way.
Not only do I have a lot of personal experience in utilizing different study skills as I have a variety of masters degrees, but I also have a Masters in Education. Also, I have experience in teaching students in a classroom environment from 4th to 10th grade. I believe that studying is not just about remembering a lot of different facts. Effective and successful studying is about learning how to: organize your time and thoughts; research; analyze; form arguments. Also, I believe that students learn and study in completely different ways. Some may be more receptive to information being presented visually, others may do better hearing the information or being read to, while others may have to be more tactile and move around while they study.
