About David

As a chemistry graduate student, I am constantly refining my skills as an educator as well as a student. After amassing thousands of hours of professional teaching experience in several different settings, I am confident that my methods are successful – feel free to check out what my past students have said about me! I hold myself and my work to a very high standard, and if you feel that I am not providing what you need to reach your goals, then the session is free – no questions asked.

I currently hold a degree in Biochemistry from Florida Gulf Coast University, and am actively pursuing my PhD in Chemistry from CSU. As such, I am still acutely aware of what it takes to be a successful student and what material is crucial for mastering each class. I prefer to focus my specialization in the math and science realm (aka: Algebra, Geometry, Chemistry, etc.), but I am more than adequate in many other areas as well.

A typical session would take place at the CSU library, or similar location, and is catered to the needs and requests of the student. For example, I have some students who have weekly assignments that they prefer to work on while I am there; this way, they can ask any questions as soon as they run into problems. I find this to be a commonly-successful technique for many students. Others will prefer to treat the tutoring session as a kind of ‘guided study time,’ where they cover entire chapters of material at a time in preparation for exams.

One thing that I always make sure to do, is make the student feel comfortable and important. Comfortable, meaning that they are not worried about “not knowing an easy problem” and can relax when I’m around – I know some instructors can be hard to approach! Important, meaning that they know that I am there for them every step of the way. If they need to meet with me TOMORROW because of the test they don’t feel prepared for, I will be there; I will do everything in my power to help my student reach their goals.

Test Preparation:
ACT Math,
ACT Science,
ASVAB,
GED,
GRE, PSAT,
SAT Math,
TEAS

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have much experience in all of the Math subjects that are tested on the ACT test (Algebra, Geometry, etc), and have used the material from those classes for years. Math is one of my strongest core academic areas, and my test scores reflect that. I have also tutored several students on this very material, to great success.

ACT Science

I am a science major, so naturally science is my strongest academic area. My highest scoring section on the ACT was in the Science section, and I have since studied much more in the realm of science. I have also tutored several students on the ACT test to great success.

Adobe Photoshop

I took a graphic design class in high school, where we heavily used Photoshop to edit images and create graphics. Also, I spent a year doing marketing work for a company where I was in charge of designing and creating flyers and other graphic-based pieces. Photoshop was my primary tool for this task, and I have become quite proficient with it because of this.

Algebra 1

I have consistently utilized various algebraic concepts and formulas throughout my chemistry career. Beyond my practical understanding of Algebra, I also have years of experience as a tutor in several school districts, with many wonderful testimonials from past students.

Algebra 2

Advanced Chemistry concepts rely heavily on basic fundamental knowledge of all aspects of math, and as such, I use Algebra in my day-to-day work constantly. I have tutored Algebra 2 to dozens of students over the years, and I have seen excellent results.

ASVAB

I have great experience with the material covered in the science and math portions of the ASVAB, since I am a science major (which requires a lot of math as well). I also have some hands-on experience with some of the more mechanical questions asked on the test (pertaining to automobiles, electronics, etc) from my previous work experience. On top of that, I am very familiar with how to approach studying for standardized tests such as this, and am very capable of assisting with building those skills.

Biochemistry

I graduated top of my class with a BS in Biochemistry from Florida Gulf Coast University. Since then, I have begun a PhD program at CSU in pursuit of my doctorate in Chemistry.

Biology

I am currently pursuing a degree with a Chemistry major and a Biology minor. Because of this, I have a strong background in many areas of science, including Biology. I received all "A"s in Biology 1, and had an excellent professor, who covered much more material than the course required. I have tutored many students in this class as well.

Calculus

Calculus is one of those classes that seems completely foreign at first. The word problems seem like a new language and all of the rules and tricks can be confusing at first. I like to explain things in a way that makes them quick to learn and easy to remember.

Chemistry

Chemistry is my major as well as my passion. I have completed a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, and am currently pursuing my PhD in Chemistry from CSU. The bulk of my tutoring experience comes from helping students with this very subject, and I am always looking forward to taking on another.

GED

I passed all of my high school classes with above average marks, and was in accelerated or advanced placement classes the whole time. In addition to that, I have completed my first two years of college. This has granted me my Associate in Arts as well as a high school diploma.

General Computer

I have had a computer for most of my life, and learned to use them entirely on my own. I have also worked as a Technician at a computer and networking company, where I gained a much better understanding of computing. I am also very frequently helping family members learn how to perform basic functions on their computers (such as searching the internet, checking e-mail, paying bills online, etc.).

Geometry

Geometry can be especially difficult for a lot of students. It requires students to take a step back from what they know of arithmetic and Algebra and really look at a lot of new ideas. It is this unique way of thinking mathematically that is so difficult for students to grasp, but I think I have found ways to help. I have seen many students turn their grades around when they thought it was far too late, and it is truly amazing to watch that happen.

Microsoft Excel

I have been using Excel for personal use for several years to keep track of budgets, bills, and other things. I have also used the program as a student to create spreadsheets for lab reports in many of my science classes. On a more professional level, I have had to use Excel at a previous job to keep track of client databases. I am capable of imputing functions into the cells - not just having the program act as a grid-based list. It is more than that, and that is what I tutor.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have several years' experience with Powerpoint, both as a student and a tutor. I have created countless presentations for various academic courses throughout my education, and many of them were quite complex. I have also tutored classmates in the past with Powerpoint to help them create more professional and effective presentations.

Microsoft Word

I have almost a decade of experience with Microsoft Word as both a personal and professional user. I have created many different documents of varying types and complexities for a previous employer, and have learned many of the "tips and tricks" to the software. This is a very important program to learn for business purposes, as it is capable of much more than simply recording type.

Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry is one of the most difficult subjects for many students, and I have helped plenty of people get through it feeling confident in their abilities. I am constantly refining my expertise, reviewing textbooks and example problems, and finding new resources to provide to my students.

Physical Science

When I was in 6th grade I was enrolled in the IMAST program at Pinellas Park Middle School, which was an advanced science program. This program continued through 8th grade, and had a large focus on physical science. I passed all of my related courses with straight "A"s and was among the top of the program.

Prealgebra

As you can see from my other math qualifications, mathematics is one of my strongest academic areas. I have experience tutoring in very advanced math courses as well as more beginner classes. Prealgebra is very familiar to me, and I have much experience tutoring at this level. This is the course that can be the "make or break" point for many students, and it is important to get a solid understanding of the material early on.

Precalculus

I took Precalculus two years before most students, and passed the class with an "A+". I later moved on to take AP Calculus and college-level Calculus 2 - both of which build off of the basics from this course. I have also tutored students in trig and precalc (very similar courses) to great success, and I continue to use much of this class in every math class I take.

PSAT

I scored an 1840 on my initial attempt at the SAT. My math score was my highest at 650 out of 800. And my reading score was 630 (also out of 800). I have tutored many students over the years on PSAT and SAT-related material to great success. I believe it is important to be prepared early for the test, so you can maximize scoring potential.

SAT Math

I scored an 1840 on my initial attempt at the SAT. My math score was my highest at 650 out of 800. This placed me in the 85% national percentile. I also have great experience as a tutor for the Math SAT, as this is one of my most requested subjects.

Trigonometry

I took Trigonometry two years before most students, and passed the class with an "A". I later moved on to take AP Calculus and college-level Calculus 2 - both of which use trigonometric concepts. I have also tutored students in trig and precalc (very similar courses) to great success.

Thank you David!

We appreciate all your dedication and support this past school year. Our daughter finished Algebra with an A!!! Your approach has given her confidence applying what you have taught her with tools and strategies in class and tests. I realize I mentioned this before but your approach to tutoring is exactly what is needed to succeed. You are a great listener and quick to adapt to your students' perso
