I was a high school classroom teacher for 9 years. I was noted by my administration for having a particular talent in relating to students and getting them to turn a hate for the subject into a love for it. If you're high school or entry college level I'll give you an improvement in grades and in confidence. My goal is to put myself out of a job so you can succeed on your own!

I hold a bachelor's in Astrophysics and a Master's in Secondary Science Education, both degrees from the University of Colorado. During my career, I've taught, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, Physical Science, Calculus, Precalculus, Algebra I, Remedial Math, and Earth Science.

As your tutor, my FIRST goal is to get you confident and comfortable. You can't succeed if the work is torture. I'll show you that you can do this. My second goal is to give you the tools to succeed - how to approach word problems, how to know what's important and what's not, how to understand what the problem is really asking. With my help, math and science will make sense and be molehills instead of mountains!

I work hard for your success. If we can't get the right answer to a problem in a session, I'll work in my own time afterwards and send you the proper solution as soon as possible.

Study Skills,

Study Skills

I have 9 years experience teaching middle and high school and have a refined technique on getting students to focus and be organized. As a child, I had ADHD and remember what it was like to struggle in a system that didn't work the way I did. Let me take that expertise and help you or your child find a method that will get you back on track to the success you know you deserve!

Vocabulary

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I've taught Algebra 1 in the classroom and have tutored it to several students. If equations and negative numbers are confusing, I'm the guy to talk to.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I've tutored several students in Algebra 2 and am comfortable and familiar with teaching all its topics. I focus on concepts and practice as a way of achieving mastery.
Biology,

Biology

I've taught high school biology several times. The areas I know best are cytology (cells), genetics, taxonomy, ecology, and evolution. I've also taught a year of botany and human anatomy, although my knowledge of those two subjects is a bit weaker.
Calculus,

Calculus

I have a strong college background with more than 3 years of calculus. I've taught a course worth dual credit (with a local college) for several years. If it's first-year college level calculus material, I know it thoroughly. I can also teach a smattering of calculus 2 (sequences and series) and a fair amount of calculus 3 (double and triple integrals).
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I've taught high school chemistry several times, both remedial and advanced. I'm comfortable with electron orbitals, stoichiometry (balancing equations), moles and molarity, chemical and physical properties, the periodic table, the ideal gas law, redox reactions, and thermodynamics. My electrochemistry is a bit weaker, but I can still teach it.
Geometry,

Geometry

I've been a high school math and science teacher for 9 years and understand the difficulties and benefits of a solid foundation in math. I've also tutored several students in geometry and know the most common difficulties.
Physics,

Physics

I'm well-versed in all topics in physics. Newton's laws, friction, linear motion (velocity and acceleration), gravity, momentum and impulse, energy, work, power, circuits, optics, thermodynamics, radioactive decay and half life, relativity, and quantum mechanics. Physics can be especially tricky so I help kids focus on how to properly use the equations they're given in class. I've also taught this class as a dual-credit college level course, so if you want your child to get ahead, I know how to push them far!
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I've taught a class in this subject for several years. I'll help your child with graphing, special functions, applications of sine, cosine, and tangent. I can teach polar and rectangular coordinates, finding roots of equations, imaginary numbers, conic sections, areas and volumes, and various equations of lines.

Trigonometry

My skills in trigonometry allow me to help get across all concepts with sine, cosine, and tangent. I'll help you child with how to use the functions, when to use the functions, how to apply the functions, and how to relate them to the unit circle. The foundation we can lay here will help serve them for any future math courses. I'm comfortable with helping kids memorize key trig functions, too, if school or parents wish it!

I've taught several years of physical science. I'm familiar with all subjects for physical science but place this emphasis on teaching kids to think like scientists do. Highest grade yet!

My son got an 87 on his exam. Highest grade yet! It’s definitely helping. Joshua is easy to work with and explains things in a way my son understands. He’s responsive and prompt. It’s going great.

Great tutor!

Joshua is so good at breaking down the work to an understandable level. He is so patient and really connected with my child. So much was accomplished in a short period of time thanks to Joshua's style.

Very patient and knowledgeable

Helped my son figure out what he was doing wrong in math. Quickly pinpointed the problem and explained it in a way that made sense! My son was very happy he made the choice to use Joshua.

Very relatable and engaging!

I met with Josh to get help with study skills during my freshman year of college and he is very relatable and had great ideas to help improve my studying, focus, and organization.

Wonderful and Patient Tutor

I'm a mom of a 17 year old boy who HATED math. He did a summer semester of Algebra 2 with Josh as his tutor. He finished the class and came home to me and said that "it's really not that hard how Josh explains it" My son's attitude and work ethic turned around and I truly attribute it to Josh's way with teens, patience and OF COURSE great knowledge of the subject. I highly recommend him. Thank you Josh

Very good

He mostly taught us the basics of science and chemistry of life. He was very understandable and humorous . Joshua made it less complicated but overall joshua was a great tutor, he took time to learn about us and what defers the both of us and in the future we hope to be seeing him again even when school starts.

Helpful and knowledgeable tutor!

Mr. C is helpful in showing me techniques on how to solve and comprehend problems, as well as how to apply concepts to a variety of types of problems. As someone who does not usually understand physics intuitively, Mr. C has helped me with the translation from concept to application, and many of the topics covered have been simplified. I have been doing significantly better on tests since I started taking lessons.

Josh is Great!

My son has been tutoring with him since the beginning of the school year, and my son mentioned the other day that there would be no way here would be passing his class if it weren't for Josh.

Detailed Tutor

Our son likes Joshua's style, as he writes out examples that he can take with him which is really helpful! His grades are improving!
