I am amazed at how organized and prepared he is for class. I am excited about the progress I have made and look forward to learning more!! He is a top notch teacher who makes you feel comfortable and teaches you at your speed. I have not been in school for several years and was worried about the teacher getting frustrated with my inability to pick the language up fast. He is very patient with me and stresses "it takes time". I am very thankful I found Alex to learn this language with its perfect!!
I worked with Alex for ~5 months or so prior to moving to Costa Rica for a year with work. I enjoyed working with Alex and learning Spanish. He did a good job of working through the grammar in class and explaining how things work. This worked well with my engineering mind. I do much better when I understand how/why something is done. Just as important to me, the home work assignments were valuable too. Much of this was writing a dialogue, paragraph, or some such and then practicing reading it and sending a recording of that to Alex. We'd then either talk about it in class, or he'd send a recording back. Each class included some portion of speaking in Spanish talking about what we did over the weekend, work, surgery, skiing, etc. This was all good and helped me feel more comfortable speaking it.
What I have found interesting is comparing Alex to the Spanish tutor I now have in Costa Rica, which is with Berlitz. After a 1.5 months of Berlitz classes, I am much less impressed with them and more so with Alex. Berlitz is doing the entire class in Spanish, and while the tutor tries to get grammar concepts across, it's not happening at a rate I like. While Alex did not have a grammar book, he made use of online tools for this - which I keep going back to -, and Berlitz doesn't do much with. They do have a book, but it is woefully inadequate to get grammar ideas across. I understand the immersion concept, but so far I am not impressed by their method while I continue to be with Alex. I keep referring back to notes I took in class when I forget something.
One of the interesting things Alex does is use music to help teach Spanish. I thought this a bit strange at first, but I ended up liking it as well as finding some new groups of music I enjoy.
I'd definitely recommend Alex again. He's also up on remote communications and can use skype to meet with you as well as other forms of electronic communication.
Our daughter's first lesson with Alex went so good. She seems very confident and excited about starting school and her Spanish class again! Thanks!
Alexander was prepared, professional; and best of all, very friendly. He was not only great at teaching but his great personality lightened the lesson. Alexander helped me to grasp the concepts of preterite and imperfect better than I ever have before. I am much more confident in my understanding of preterite and imperfect, and am no longer nervous for my Spanish final. I have had tutors before, and Alexander far exceeded my expectations of what a tutor should do. I will definitely be meeting with him in the future.
Alex is a very easy going guy who is professional and patient and very good at what he does. I have never studied Spanish before and he explained his teaching method in a very clear and concise manner. I could tell that he had been teaching for many years and he really does a great job of customizing his lessons based on the goals of his student. I would highly recommend Alex to anyone who wants to learn Spanish at any level.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I currently work with students ages 5-12, teaching them conversational Spanish. We work together both in person and online using various interactive software programs to make it fun and engaging. I have worked with elementary through high school age students for the past 11 years, beginning with a non-profit in Boulder, Colorado called The Elementary Spanish Program, then with the Lowell Whiteman School in Steamboat Springs, Co. I currently work with the Language Lounge of Fort Collins where I help students of all ages with their language challenges. I also help with their organizational and study skills which are vital to success in our public school system.
Natural Language Learning
Learning a language is FUN when it is done naturally and in-line with how the brain learns. As children, we had little or no difficulty learning our first language. We were sponges, absorbing the visual world and the sounds of people speaking around us. Unfortunately, teaching a second language has turned into a complex, often boring process, that works against our brain's natural ability to learn language. This traditional method often discourages learners to the point of giving up.
Natural language learning on the other hand works with our brains. Here are the 5 concepts that reflect my instruction methods (and which also support the latest research on how the brain learns)
Trust the brain to learn languages
The brain needs relevant and interesting stimulus
Engaging your emotions heightens your ability to learn
You will feel motivated by your success when you learn naturally
Absorbing a language naturally changes us, and we need to accept that change
I create a natural learning experience, molded by the unique goals and learning styles of our students. You will begin speaking right away, I will teach you relevant, interesting language to build upon what you already know. The engaging conversation between student and teacher grows until it reaches a point where a grammatical explanation is needed. Once introduced, the grammar is incorporated right back into the spoken conversation increasing the fluidity and correctness of the dialogue. By the end of the lesson, students feel successful in what they have achieved and motivated to continue learning, naturally.
I have been teaching, tutoring and mentoring elementary through high-school age students for 12 years. When I begin working with a student, making sure he or she is organized is priority number one. This includes helping them create a system for keeping track of their papers, assignments and graded material. Often times, this organization alone can affect a positive change in their school performance (and confidence).
Regarding study skills, my technique for helping a student depends on the student. When we start working together, I investigate the unique challenges that the student is having. This is done primarily through reviewing their graded homework, tests and quizzes looking for challenge patterns. If needed and with permission, I will contact their teachers to investigate and collaborate further. From there, study skills will be taught depending on the students specific challenges and their unique learning style(s).
