My desire to learn and teach has remained constant over the years. I find teaching to be one of the most rewarding parts of my life, and I love to see my students excel and feel confident in their abilities! I know that my extensive teaching background and passion for math, college test prep, and the sciences would make me an excellent candidate as your tutor. In fact, I was named 1 of the top 250 wyzant tutors in the country for 2015!
I graduated from UCSD (BS in Physiology and Neuroscience) with top honors of Summa Cum Laude (top 1% with a GPA of 3.948). During my undergraduate years, I mastered math and biology classes and received more A+'s than A's. I also spent my time as a teacher's assistant for 3 biology courses covering metabolic biochemistry, basic biology (BILD 2), and mammalian physiology. As a teacher's assistant, I taught 1 hr sections using notes and practice problems that I had created.
Later, I obtained a Master's in Biomedical Science from CSU and graduated with a 4.0. During this program, I spent time as a teacher's assistant for a human anatomy course and worked in a research lab on campus.
Between my years at UCSD and CSU, I worked for a top test preparatory company for 2 years. I received over 100hrs of training so that I could teach the following classes: ACT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, and MCAT. Currently, I only tutor the ACT and SAT for which I have developed my own test taking strategies that have proven to be very successful. I recently had a student receive a perfect score (36) on the ACT along with multiple other students in the 30's. Other students have shown up to a 33% increase in their overall scores and up to a 14 point increase in one subject. Note, these improvements greatly depend on the student's willingness and drive to succeed. I do not take preparation lightly and I will assign homework! If you are interested in ACT tutoring, then I would be more than happy to further discuss what the sessions entail. I recommend you start tutoring at least 2 months prior to your desired ACT test date.

Megan worked with our 16 yr old son, Sam, this past year to prepare him for the ACT. He scored a 28 on the first practice test before tutoring with Megan. They worked hard for 3-4 months, and Megan was fantastic! She was able to quickly assess Sam's strengths and challenges and had strategies to significantly improve his scores. She is very professional and ethical, and she is a great teacher! By the third month Megan felt Sam had progressed enough to do much of the further practicing on his own. She then cut back on their time together (initially it was twice weekly for approximately 45-75 minutes for six weeks, and by the end it was just brief check-ins weekly) which saved us money while giving Sam thorough preparation for the test.
Sam took the ACT in April and scored a 34 overall(32,34,35,35)! Needless to say we are very happy with Megan.
Our daughter Anna (16 this summer) started tutoring with Megan June 2015, and she will take the ACT this September. Anna has learned a lot already and loves working with Megan. Each week Anna has homework assigned by Megan (catered to Anna's strengths and needs), and in addition she practices the specific test taking techniques she is learning. Megan always specifically designs the tutoring and homework to what our children need to improve their scores: an example is that our daughter is already doing very well on the reading portion so Anna continues to practice it on her own but only uses time with Megan on that section if she has problems. So again we as parents save some money, our children learn some independence, and they are getting excellent tutoring for the ACT!
Megan is very professional and thorough, and has great energy. She helped our son markedly improve his scores, and we are excited to see Anna's ACT score this fall! (and so is Anna). THANK YOU Megan!!
Megan had a real challenge with our son going into the ACT. He is a super smart kid, but has ADD and an auditory processing disorder. She has been very patient and diligent with him. And his scores have increased tremendously! Her system really works, BUT the student must be willing to commit and practice. It is very possible that our son may get into the college of his choice. We will most definitely be using Megan for our younger son as well.
My daughter says Megan is her favorite tutor ever. she showed her ways to work through problems that no other teacher ever taught her. She said Megan is fantastic at getting her to think through the math problems instead of just telling her what to do. She helps her understand difficult concepts and gives her praise when she figures out the answers. I highly recommend Megan as a tutor!
My son start working with Megan at the beginning of this school year. He is a sophomore taking Geometry, and struggles with dyslexia and attention span, so absorbing material in class is not always the easiest for him. One on one is something my son has always needed. After six months of weekly sessions, he "gets it!" He now helps his friends with their homework, and is the one participating in group discussion in class. Thank you Megan for helping my son develop understanding and self confidence in math! Yay!
Megan was a huge help to me with ACT tutoring. I started out with a 25 and after two months of tutoring (14 lessons), I got a 29 (27 in October and 29 in December). My biggest improvement was my reading score. I started out with a 21 in that section and after doing countless reading passages and just learning how to implement a new technique Megan showed me, I got up to a 31 on my December test. Without the different techniques that she showed me, there is no way I could've improved my score by that much. She can look at your strengths and weaknesses and base your sessions off of those so you will work on exactly what you need in order to improve your score. She is very patient and personable, as well as flexible with scheduling! If you are wondering if tutoring is worth the money, we spent about $800 total in tutoring sessions and the amount of money I received in scholarships has gone up thousands of dollars (so $50/hr is well worth it). I would highly recommend Megan if you are looking for an ACT Tutor, she is amazing!
Megan has been helping our daughter a lot with her confidence in her abilities and in her skills. Very thankful!
Megan has helped me prepare for the ACT test. She gives me specific techniques and strategies to answer the questions correctly.
Thank you Megan! I know a review is the best way to thank you for all you have done for my two boys. They now are more confident in Algebra and Geometry. They have improved immensely, coming up 1.5 letter grades in 11 sessions. I ask them after each session; "Do you understand it now" and they always respond "Yes." The methods and how you explain it to them, is making a difference. It is all in the presentation of material, you are connecting with kids! Thank you!
Megan helped my daughter prepare for the ACT, and did a great job. My daughter has some memory and processing speed issues, and Megan went out of her way to try new techniques to help her in addition to the regular techniques she uses to tutor for this test. Additionally, Megan demands a lot from her students, which I consider a definite plus, and was great at communicating with me throughout the entire time she was working with her. My daughter said the tutoring with Megan was more beneficial then the tutoring she received at Huntington (and more cost efficient!). We highly recommend her!
Megan is an amazing tutor! My daughter was struggling in math and science. Megan helped her understand and feel more comfortable with the two subjects and by the end of the school year she was excelling in both. During parent-teacher conferences, her teachers even told me that they were impressed by her improvements. I will definitely be sending my other daughter to see Megan.
My daughter has had a few lessons with Megan and has already learned a lot and is more relaxed about doing her homework and studying for tests. She did very well on her last test and we will definitely keep seeing Megan for tutoring!!
Don't know what the kids would do without Megan. She does a tremendous job. Will continue to use her for several subjects including ACT Prep.
Megan is an amazing tutor! She is really good at explaining things and giving great practice problems to work through. Megan also had useful tips that I can use on the GRE. I highly recommend her!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
With 10+ years of tutoring under my belt, along with my own experience in college, I have learned many successful study skills that are applicable to all classes. On top of that, I also worked for a national test prep agency where I was certified to teach: GRE, GMAT, ACT, SAT, and the Biology section of the MCAT. I have over 100 hours of training with this agency. The training taught me study skills for all types of subjects, tests, and learning styles.
