About Megan

**Please note that I am starting to book students for fall tutoring in preparation for the fall and winter tests. Please contact me asap if you are interested in fall tutoring as I book up quickly.**

My desire to learn and teach has remained constant over the years. I find teaching to be one of the most rewarding parts of my life, and I love to see my students excel and feel confident in their abilities! I know that my extensive teaching background and passion for college test prep and math would make me an excellent candidate as your tutor. In fact, I was named 1 of the top 250 Wyzant tutors in the country for 2015!

I graduated from UC San Diego (BS in Physiology and Neuroscience) with top honors of Summa Cum Laude (top 1% with a GPA of 3.948). During my undergraduate years, I mastered math and biology classes and received more A+'s than A's. I also spent time as a teacher's assistant for 3 biology courses covering metabolic biochemistry, basic biology (BILD 2), and mammalian physiology. As a teacher's assistant, I taught 1 hr sections using notes and practice problems that I had created.

Later, I obtained a Master's in Biomedical Science from Colorado State University and graduated with a 4.0. During this program, I spent time as a teacher's assistant for a human anatomy course and worked in a research lab on campus.

Between my years at UCSD and CSU, I worked for a top test preparatory company for 2 years. I received over 100 hours of training so that I could teach the following classes: ACT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, and MCAT. Currently, I only tutor the ACT and SAT for which I have developed my own test taking strategies that have proven to be very successful. I recently had a student receive a perfect score (36) on the ACT along with multiple other students in the 30's. Other students have shown up to a 33% increase in their overall scores and up to a 15 point increase in one subject. Note, these improvements greatly depend on the student's willingness and drive to succeed. I do not take preparation lightly and I will assign homework! If you are interested in ACT or SAT tutoring, then I would be more than happy to further discuss what the sessions entail. I recommend you start tutoring at least 2 months prior to your desired ACT or SAT test date.

Please don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions or would like to start tutoring!!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Over the years of ACT English tutoring, I have developed my own test taking strategies along with grammar notes and lesson plans. By the end of our sessions, students will have reviewed every grammar rule tested. In fact, I have had students show score improvements of over 10 points. The art of grammar has long been lost in schools. By re-teaching the material to students in a methodical fashion, many students find that their writing improves by the end of our sessions - an added perk!

ACT Math

Over the years of ACT math tutoring, I have developed my own test taking strategies along with math notes and lesson plans. By the end of our sessions, students will have reviewed every math concept that could be tested - eliminating stress! I recently had a student score a 36 on the math section and many others score in the 30s.

ACT Reading

Some students are initially turned off by the fast paced nature of the ACT reading section. However, thanks to my techniques, students find the reading section to be more of a matching game rather than an intense analysis. As a result, I have had students show score improvements of over 15 points.

ACT Science

Some students are initially turned off by the fast paced nature of the ACT science section. However, thanks to my techniques, students find the science section to be more of a matching game rather than an analysis. As a result, I have had students show score improvements of over 10 points.

Algebra 2

Due to common core and state wide-curricula, teachers do not have time to teach the basic foundation of algebra 2. As a result, students come to me struggling with advanced problems. I believe that students must understand the "why", not just the "how" to solve a problem. Once my students understand the basic foundation of concepts, they quickly learn how to solve complicated problems. Algebra 2 is the heart of future high school and college classes. Falling behind in this class sets students up for many problems later in their education.

Precalculus

Due to Common Core and state-wide curricula, teachers do not have time to teach the basic foundation of precalculus/college algebra. As a result, students come to me struggling with advanced problems. I believe that students must understand the "why", not just the "how" to solve a problem. Once my students understand the basic foundation of concepts, they quickly learn how to solve complicated problems.

SAT Math

While the SAT has recently changed, I have done extensive research and preparation into this new test. I have tweaked my test prep techniques to maximize student success. I have developed my own test taking strategies along with math notes and lesson plans. By the end of our sessions, students will have reviewed every math concept that could be tested - eliminating stress!

SAT Reading

While the SAT has recently changed, I have done extensive research and preparation into this new test. I have tweaked my test prep techniques to maximize student success. The reading section can be quite tricky: passages from the 1700s. However, I teach students to approach passages as a detective. This allows students to do more matching rather than comprehending advanced college material.

SAT Writing

While the SAT has recently changed, I have done extensive research and preparation into this new test. I have tweaked my test prep techniques to maximize a student's success. The grammar notes I have created cover all rules that will be tested, and my techniques help students identify what rule each question is testing.

Patient and Wise

During the course of 3 months, Megan helped our son reach his goal of an ACT composite into the 30’s. In some areas, this was an improvement of 15-18 points from where he started. Her proven techniques and strategies helped him tremendously and I would encourage anyone that is looking to improve their scores to give her a call. Her patience and wisdom are worth every penny! Thanks, Megan!
