About Laura

Learning to read, write, and creatively express ideas, a student needs to know the foundations of the English language. As a graduate of Colorado State University with an English major, I have these skills as well as the ability to aide with research papers, editing creative writing assignments, an extensive knowledge of poetry and theater, and have many speed-reading techniques that would aide a struggling student with too much reading, not enough time, and a hard time retaining information. As well as skills in areas surrounding reading and writing, I obtained a minor in entomology and can also aide in editing scientific research papers as well as help a student learn to collect insects and other arthropods and also to identify and enrich the knowledge of a student on these wonderful creatures. As a past Model UN officer and conference organizer, I also have a lot of experience in international and policy issues including how to research the policies of foreign governments, speech-writing, and editing papers pertaining to other countries, humanitarian issues, and general history overviews. I have worked with elementary, middle, and high school students, and I find it's best to communicate with the student about what problems they are encountering before I design a tutoring program for that student. All individuals have different learning styles and I believe tutoring styles should cater to a student's learning style. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

After helping students with test prep, I have also helped many write college essays, understand how to choose colleges and when to apply, using all of the resources available to make sure the applications have been strong. The key to being accepted into college is providing a college with a small snapshot not only of who a student is academically, but to be sure to include interests and special information and experiences that allow the college to see how valuable the student could be as an addition to their campus. Many students struggle especially with the personal essay because it's hard to see how individual experiences can be so valuable, but everyone has a story. The key is learning how to be confident and understanding oneself enough to put it down on paper for someone else to read.

Public Speaking

In college courses, I was advanced in speech writing, delivery, and critique. I have tutored many students in public speaking through the activity of Model United Nations. I have aided students in writing speeches, preparing before a speech, and techniques to alleviate nervousness while giving a speech. I have also helped students to critique their own performance during a speech so that each speech is an improvement upon the last.

Social Studies

Social studies course strive to combine the social sciences and humanities to give a more well-rounded understanding of the world. In college, I excelled in the humanities, sociology, and international relations courses. I also aided high school students in writing and debating about current events in a Model United Nations conference that I helped to organize, promote, and hold at Colorado State University. I have been asked to judge at many Model United Nations conferences in the Denver area. One of my students was struggling in social studies and I helped her to understand the topics more easily so that she would be prepared for the in class discussions that made up 10% of her grade. I also aided her with papers and test preparation for the course.

In college, I took the sociology course and had a near perfect score. I am well-versed in sociological concepts and can aptly explain the terms, people, and examples for various sociological theories. I am also well-versed in research regarding the social studies and can assist students in finding materials for sociological research papers. With my English degree, I am able to aide a student in editing any written work for sociology while also checking for continuity between the theories, concepts, and examples provided by the student.

Study Skills

Study skills are the basis for improving academic performance. I rarely have a student that does not need to find an organization strategy and study schedule needing to be tailored to his/her own learning style and schedule. I learned study skills strategies while volunteering after school at an elementary school library. I also volunteered to aide other students in college with their study skills. I have assisted students from a variety of social backgrounds and learning styles in finding a compatible set of time management and study strategies.

I am a member of the International Thespian Society due to participation in numerous productions in high school. I also excelled in my Shakespeare course and have enjoyed reading, performing scenes from, writing papers on and attending numerous theatrical performances in genres from Shakespeare to modern adult drama. I can explain motifs, symbols, and Olde English language as well as help to aide students who wish to perform their own lines better for a performance.

Great tutor and always very easy to reach — Laura is a great tutor and always answer my emails and phone calls when I try to reach her. Last parent teacher conference that I went to, my daughter's teacher told me that she has improved enormously. I appreciate all the time that she give to my daughter and her work she does for her at her house. Thank you very much Laura. ...
