When I lived in a suburb of Chicago, I began my teaching career as a full-time tutor at a high school. Looking back that was the job that I enjoyed most because it did not involve evaluating students, only helping them learn. My students all loved me and I loved the personal relationship that I developed with them. Additionally, I tutored privately, and of those students I still follow them on Facebook as "friends." The relationships that I developed with my students was perhaps the most gratifying part of helping them learn.

As a WyzAnt tutor, I have experienced gratifying experiences tutoring high school students as I have done before and I have enjoyed meeting and working with families who share the same value for learning that I have. Additionally a whole new vista has opened up to me, tutoring adult students who are taking college classes. Their motivation and commitment have been inspirational in how people continue to learn and expand their horizons.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I am a retired mathematics teacher. I taught Algebra 1 for 17 years at the high school level both in Colorado and Illinois.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have taught both honors level and regular level mathematics. In teaching Algebra 2, I have tried to emphasized modeling real-world data and the functions that allow us to model this data (linear, quadratic, polynomial, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric) in order to make sense of the techniques that we use to solve them. Additionally, I emphasize the use of the TI-84 plus in order to facilitate the complex work that is necessary.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have taught both honors and regular level Geometry. In teaching geometry, I have both utilized the use of discovery as well as abstract mathematical proofs to help students understand Geometry. As a tutor, I have tutored many students in two column proofs as well as in angle chases using the conjectures (theorems) available to them. It is indeed my favorite subject because I believe that the logical thinking that students acquire in Geometry will support them in their work in future mathematics courses.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I am a retired high school mathematics teacher. I have taught for over 17 years in both Illinois and Colorado. In Illinois, I taught 3 years of pre-algebra to 9th grade students.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus is an exciting subject because it makes sense of previous mathematics courses and looks forward to calculus which has so many applications. It is a difficult course because many of the topics seem unrelated to each other. I believe that sense can be made of the myriad of topics covered by viewing the topics as a body of work that models real-world situations and that the techniques you learn are to help you solve the real-world situations. By giving the topics purpose, you can get a better understanding of why we do what we do. Hopefully, this approach will help students in their study of precalculus.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

I am a retired Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus teacher. One of the requirements is to prepare students for the SAT. I have been successful in preparing students though instruction in mathematics and additionally with a focus on the types of questions asked on the SAT. I focus on test taking strategies and on possible distracters that cause students to choose the incorrect answers. Additionally, I direct students to focus on exactly what is being asked and whether there is an easy solution to the problem. I utilize both the Princeton Review test reviews and the Kaplan Test Reviews to prepare the students.

Wonderfully patient and caring instructor

Mary is fantastic. In just two weeks she has helped our daughter so much. You won’t be disappointed if you hire this tutor. After our daughter’s first session we saw immediate improvement. Thank you Mary!

Wonderful, hardworking, patient tutor!

Can't really say enough good things about Mary! She's helping our daughter catch up to the higher level algebra class for next school year. They sit down and get straight to work for the entire hour. Our daughter loves her and she's learning a ton. Super-excellent tutor!

Geometry Tutoring Help

Mary is tutoring my son in Geometry. At our initial meeting, she formulated a plan to help him get through an online course so that he can be in the accelerated high school courses. She is well organized and has a wonderful, confident and calming outlook. I have no doubt that my son will thrive under her guidance.

Grateful

I really don't know the material that was discussed but am very grateful that this was a beginning time for my grandson.

Tutor responded:

Thank you Kathleen for your feedback. I hope that he will gain an understanding of mathematical thinking that will hold him in good stead throughout his academic career.

Knowledgeable and very patient.

I am taking college level algebra and needed help. I found Mary on WyzAnt, she is very knowledgeable and patient. We covered a lot about functions on our first session and I am sure we will be covering a lot more information through out the semester as I have decided to use her once a week tell the end of class. Mary has a very flexible schedule as well which is a bonus for me.
