About Sean

Hello, and thank you for visiting my page to learn more about me. I am currently a graduate student at the University of Northern Colorado getting a Ph.D in Chemical Education. I realized my love for teaching and tutoring as I was finishing my undergraduate degrees in chemistry and biology, and quickly decided that I wanted to make a career out of it. People say that if you love what you do then you never work a day in your life, and I think that definitely applies to me.

I take a lot of pride in helping students learn, and I realize that teaching and preparing young minds for their future is a huge responsibility. I also know that some subjects such as chemistry and math are just plain hard, and that every student should get every opportunity to develop a deep understanding and appreciation for these subjects because of their significant importance in our daily lives. For these reasons, I always take great care to truly understand the needs of my students by trying to put myself in their shoes. I never act like an expert who simply dispenses information, and I absolutely never look down on my students for misunderstandings. Patience is perhaps the most important quality in am educator, and I think I have it in spades.

I have been teaching a variety of chemistry subjects at UNC for a number of years now while I earned my Master's Degree in biochemistry and now that I am earning my Ph.D in chemical education. I have also taught chemistry classes to high school students during the summer in the Frontiers of Science Institute program the past two summers. Teaching these students was a hugely valuable experience as it helped me connect to contemporary high school students and show them how cool and relevant chemistry was in their lives.

The one thing I want to stress most is that I truly love teaching. Guiding a student from misunderstanding and uncertainty to comprehension and deep appreciation is the most rewarding part of my job. I take your education or that of your student very seriously, but I always want learning to be fun and meaningful so the knowledge really resonates.

I specialize in teaching mathematics including calculus, algebra, and statistics as well as all varieties of chemistry including general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and even physical chemistry. I strongly believe in challenging students by asking them questions throughout the session so that they develop new knowledge based on the knowledge they already have. I do not intend to lecture or simply talk at the student during a session. Active participation by the student is a much more powerful teaching technique, and I strive to keep my students engaged at all times.

I have significant experience with a wide range of students, and I would love the opportunity to help you or your student learn chemistry and math. I look forward to hearing from you, and I truly appreciate you taking the time to learn more about me. Thank you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Northern Colorado. As part of receiving that degree I took the following classes relevant to genetics: genetics, ecology, evolution, population genetics, virology, and microbiology. I also have taught a chemistry and biochemistry course to high schools students at UNC the past two summers in which one of the focuses was on genetics and genetic engineering.

Organic Chemistry

I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Colorado during which I was awarded excellence in organic chemistry by the chemistry department. I got a Masters Degree in chemistry where I utilized important organic chemistry strategies such as reflux, column chromatography, HPLC, NMR, and many other instruments and techniques. I legitimately enjoy doing organic chemistry and always get excited when students come asking for help. It's a very fun and valuable subject.
